Welcome Brooke,

Where are you going for training, Great Lakes? What job are you going to train for? In the Army it is MOS Military Occupational Specialty. I don't know what the Navy calls it. I really don't have any tips on what to study with out a violin. There are some videos in the Beginner's section that deal with how to hold the bow, how to hold the violin, how to apply rosin, how to draw the bow on the strings, and many more.

You can find these  HERE

I think you will be playing "Country Road" before too long. Good choice!

Welcome Brooke!

Are you being deployed over seas or going to training camp? David said it right, just go through the free lessons here. Good luck with your violin and the Navy too.flag_usa

Hello Brooke, welcome to the site and thank you for choosing to serve. The best thing you can do without the violin is to look through the videos on this site and read as much as you can about technique and just on the violin in general. Happy playing (once you have your violin that is)!

Oh, another thing you can do without a violin is listen to violin music! Or Country Road. Let it soak into you!

Good luck, always know where a floatation device is and where the nearest exit is as well. Of course in the Navy you are expected to fight any fire on board, so you better know where your fire control station is too.

Go Navy!

Welcome Brooke,

Read all you can, and watch the videos for instructions and hints.

Enjoy, it's a lot of fun.

If you think you can, or you think you can't, you're probably right.

Welcome Brooke, you are going to love the violin. Just take it slow and before you know it you will be playing Country Road.

Welcome

Maybe you should learn some theory while you're waiting, try playing the rhythm game or the sight reading game. they should be listed under learning tools. thumbs-up
