Yeah, I ran across that site shortly after I started with violin. Didn't look like the sort of place that would be real welcoming to a 2 week noob with a cheap electric violin. LOL
In fact, Fiddlerman.com looked like maybe the only place I might not get run out on a rail for making an initial post. And months later this is still the best place I know of for being a community of good folks who are generally encouraging and positive. Lots to learn here, always something interesting going on.

Fiddlerman - about violinist.com - I'm surprised that they banned you without any warning. I don't understand why. Maybe there's a strict rule in their Terms of Service which states that no advertising is allowed - but even if that was the case, you should have had a notification at least. Plus, the stupid thing - you can't re-read the TOS unless you're registered - catch 22 .. duh.. I hate that.
I've never had a problem with the admin at that site (btw, Fiddlerman, how long ago was that?)
I've had a few problems with members there, though. I posted some Youtube links of my playing (again, they were relevant to the subject), and done with the intention of helping people. I had one guy verbally shred me, saying I was a "hopeless wannabe" who hadn't a clue about playing. I get some good "fan mail" too, on my own site, and to my email - actually, I'll post that in another thread. it's fun to read!
Back to the topic, "how do you classify yourself?"
Well, I'd have to be honest and say, "decent player, creative, knowledgable - not an expert or a virtuoso, and I am aware of my musical shortcomings - but I do know what I'm doing now, and where I'm going, and by ******* I will get there!"

@Mr.Jim, keep that positive attitude and you will get there.
@Fiddlerman, your attitude, with the attitude of members is why I'm on this site. Such a vast array of talent and skills along with positive criticism and opinion. I LOVE that there is no bickering or snobbiness here.
I can't classify myself as anything yet, lol. And not a single person has laughed at my questions.

It all comes down to our personal goals. However they can be defined by each of us. I think what is really amazing about a site like this is the incredible variety you find. With age, experience, with life and with family and work. It is obvious people get a little peaved at times, but it is also obvious this too, is a family of sorts. You get the same people day in and day out, dragging in their concerns over our dinner meal of musical mayhem and musings. It doesn't matter where in the world you log in from or when in the world you play, be it a concert hall or the hall outside your bedroom door.
In the end, or should I say, in the present, does it really matter what your skill level is. I don't think it does. from what I have been reading here, if you're enjoying your self and the music you create then I guess your skill level is just right.

So, after Barry posted that link to the site that shall remain nameless, I registered there just to see what it was like over in the alternate universe. I had no idea about what had happened to Pierre or Jim.Now that I know -- and based on the vibe I picked up in my brief time there -- I won't be going back.
See, this is what I meant when, on another thread, I said, essentially, that other sites couldn't steal true blue Fiddlerman.com members away. I'm here to stay, that's for sure.
To paraphrase Dorothy Gale, if I ever go looking for my heart's desire again, I won't look any further than Fiddlerman.com, because if it isn't there, I never really lost it to begin with.
(Or something like that...you get the idea.)
So true and very well said, KindaScratchy.
I've browsed a few sites and never felt comfortable. This fiddlerman.com is definitely at home to me.
