Do YOU insure your bow, for the full value, when sending it off for a rehair?

Do YOU pay for any special insurance on your instruments?

I was just curious...

Not that I feel particularly lucky - think I'm good with Homeowner's coverage in the house... but stuff does get lost in the mail.  I just got a bit of price shock recently, so I was doing a bit of snooping about shipping insurance & found there are 'Third-party Insurers' that might be cheaper, like 'Route', 'Secursus', 'u-pic', 'Shipsurance', etc...

Anyone ever use a third-party for shipping insurance?

When I ship anything, the insurance that is included with the shipping is sufficient to cover the value of what I am shipping.

I don't ship bows out for rehair. Never had a rehair done, and I would not worry about it anyway. I don't have anymore tied up in them than what would be covered by whatever the shipper includes. It covers pretty much what the value is.

I never use those shippers, or similar, you mentioned, or anything like that. I just go to the post office, use one of the USPS single fare shipping boxes, or go to the shipper in the nearby city. They include insurance.

That said, were I to ship a bow for rehair, I would simply go to the nearby shipper. I don't think I am as fussy about my bows as what I read here, so no issues being concerned with shipping, 😁. The less complicated I can make life, the better.

So, you don't have a bow worth more than $100?

With a 'third-party' insurer you still send your item thru your preferred carrier, but I'm not sure if this is something only available for businesses - or is there one that doesn't require a subscription?

I don't consider it worth spending the money on insurance for items under a certain amount. The shipper automatically covers $500. Since I never need more than that, I don't buy extra. I have never had a rehair done, but I would not spend extra money, above what is automatically covered.

It is a crapshoot. The odds are that it will be fine. Now, I do like to play low stakes, 2/4 Texas Hold'em, craps, slots, etc. But I never go big. I think there was only one time we left Vegas where I was down $20.

I used to do small gambles for fun in Vegas (we don't go there anymore). Spending money above what is provided when shipping, is worse odds than that, in my opinion, The odds are that bow will arrive safe and sound.

In the slight chance something happened, I would take what was covered and get another. But, the chance is so slight, I am not shelling out that extra money, that will in all likelihood not need to be used.

I insure the item for what it would cost me to replace the item.   Not meaning to stray from the violin or bow topic, but last time I bought furniture, I paid for the insurance offered through the store (I typically don't).  6 months after purchasing, I had someone house sit, and the legs on the sofa buckled (I don't want to know why...)  anyway, the store tried to repair them, and when the repair wouldn't hold, thanks to the insurance, they replaced the entire sofa set, free of charge. I will definitely continue to pay the insurance when I purchase again!

I don't insure anything, but as far as rehairs go, I'm a lucky person: several luthiers less than 1 hour away, so I just take my bow there, and fetch it back one week later.

@Mouse have you never considered a rehair? it can make a not-unnoticeable difference in sound. I was surprised last time (before that I used to get a rehair at the same time as I changed the strings, so I attributed the improved tone to the string change ; last time I did only the rehair, while keeping the same strings).

@wtw Never considered it. I did one because it was an old bow I bought a while ago. The hair was loose, so I had it rehaired. But, that was the only time. I don't "dig in" much when I play. I am pretty much a light bower, don't want anyone to hear me! If they start being weird, even after rosining it, I might consider it, but seriously, if I had to, they would be shipped out and it would cost less to just buy a bow.

I've insured my violins, bows, flute, ukes for taking out of the house, so I'd assume the bows would be insured for rehair, but I wouldn't send them - I live close enough to enough rehairers to visit them. In fact my symphony orchestra gets regular visits from one.

I used to insure my fiddle, but stopped after a couple of years as I rarely take it anywhere and house insurance would cover it. For my bow to be re haired I would take it to my luthier myself, in fact I was in his shop only the other day as I have been contemplating getting those geared tuning pegs.

Geared pegs are fab - my violist friend has them. I bought her a guitar peg winder - she'd never seen one before, so she was chuffed.
