Just noticed we aren't far off 1000 members. I know it's quality ( like the current membership........

....that counts and not quantity but wouldn't it be great (and busy!!) to reach 1000!

Well, we all know I'm worth at least five members so that brings us to an even 900. cool

(Yah, I'm just joking with y'all.) laugh

Seriously, though, I'm glad to see this place is thriving. I suspect we'll get to 1000 within the next year at the rate it's growing.

True to both posts above :-)
Also, posts are coming fast now a days. We will soon be up at 20,000 posts here. That is another time for celebration.

really? excuse the negativity but have you looked at many of those 800+ member up close?

When you join 6 months ago and have only the one post where you joined, I wouldn't exactly call it an active membership.embarassed

I think the membership role needs some attention, FM and I have discussed this before. It is great on the number of posts though...thumbs-up

Boo! Negativity, Dennis haha. You're right but as there is no membership annual renewal, once a member, always a member.
You never know, the seed was planted, some of the 'not seen for ages' members may be more regular when they are ready or when it suits, or maybe some come here for the learning opportunities but are not quite as 'vocal' as the rest of us

I agree with Terry on this one. If people join for the right reason and not just to spam.

Well, if thats how you want to look at it... maybe we all should join up again using a different email and screen name and we could boost the membership well over 1000> just a thought.dancing

I don't participate in very many forums but of the one's I have been on, this one is by far the most active. I am a reptile enthusiast also, and I have a couple of websites that I frequent related to reptiles a they each have forums and hardly every have any posts. I was on a site last night and the last forum post on it was 8 months ago.

Yeah, membership is tough to rate; it would be great if there were a tool for the administrator to see the usage of the site by members.  I for one, am normally not a Forum participator, but I find the people on this forum to be particularly entertaining [really just being a smartass, actually I find this forum full of great advice].  But I know that a lot of members just use the vast number of tools on this site without the desire to participate in Forum.

Btw, in the past 3 days I turned 16 fiddlers onto this site; I'm watching to see how many actually join.

Seem's to me that this site is all about learning to play violin for free. Not, free if you post in the forum.

A post is nothing more than somone's own opinion and you know what opinion's are like, everybody's got one.

I happened to be watching the Chat Box the other night and saw where one member suggested that the non participating member's be weeded out, banned from Fiddlerman because there are so many that never post. Ban their IP number so they can never come back. Rediculous. This is not a private yaght club, there are no qualifications, no membership fee's, anyone can join no matter what part of the world they are from, no matter now much money they have. The only qualification is wanting to learn to play. I believe those were FM's intention when he opened this site. Maybe a non-poster has dropped in a few time's and went away with a bit more knowledge, whether it be from the Forum post's or the many great instructional video's, then the site has succeeded. This web site has given me the incentive to play again, after being idle for 58 years.

This to me has been the most interesting and informative website's on the WWW, you can participate if you want and if you don't want to, so beit. If only one person were to learn to play violin and play it well, then FM has done his job. I for one, have learned a lot from this site.  Thanks FM.

That's all I got to say about that.

Oh....... And that's my "OPINION"   for what it's worth. And yes, I have one of the other's too.    smile

I agree with you Fiddlestix, this site is not about forum but quality informations that FM provides with his tutorials and even fun games. No one should be left apart, no matter if they even are a registered member or not. Often I realized, with all the Anon_(random number) that those people just need to be reassured. Questions like "can I learn violin even if I'm used to frets for years", "should I try vibrato even if I'm a beginner" etc. are asked I think once every 2 days! Those people could have simply tried to google the answer or take a violin and try! But they wanted to talk about it in chat, and if it's only a little pat in the back they need to try violin well we are here when FM is not on cheerleader

On a somewhat related note...I've been curious about the roles that appear under users' names, i.e. Regular advisor, Honorary advisor, Advanced member, Member, etc. Does Fiddlerman, as admin, assign these? Or does the system assign them based on number of posts or something similar?

This thread reminded me, because I've thought that it would be helpful if the membership list could be sorted by that role, or by date joined, or by number of posts, so that we could see who the most active members are.

I don't think anyone should be bounced for inactivity in the forum for the reasons others stated above, but it would be nice to be able to find other active members and get to know who they are.

I realize the sorting thing may not be possible but I'm still curious...how do those roles get assigned?

dunno

The roles appear to be system-assigned based on number of posts. Mine switched to "Regular Advisor" when I hit 100 posts. (I think. I was more interested in not having to do math anymore.)

I've been watching that myself KS, from what I can tell it's an automatic bump up in stature every, i'm gonna say 50 post's. I may be wrong and probably am. From what I can tell, you have another 20 post's to make it to Advanced member. They add up very fast.        cheerleader

I'm so happy that this forum sucks you guys in. smile
I've had PM complaints about certain members and comments but it's difficult to know when to draw the line. I don't want to be a police but I don't like when people are rude so keep me posted. I want to keep it friendly here. smile

However you're doing it seems to be working pretty well. I've noticed that the community is pretty good at self-moderating too.

I think the "tone" in Forums is a very interesting social phenomenon.  In my opinion this site's Forum is a wonderful place to help others, get help, be encouraged, be yourself, and participate in a community, and this site is VERY unique from forums on other sites..... this really has a "safe" feel to it that most other forums I've observed don't have.

The reason I participate in this forum and no others is people on this site are very respectful of each other and are here for a growth experience, not to fulfill their own egos or take pot-shots at others for their personal enjoyment.  I'd agree with Dionysia and Fiddle4, I don't know how you've collected such a great group of members FM but it must have to do with the quality of the site and the administration of the site.

I don't know,,, this community is very enjoyable and valuable.
