Opinions and Reviews of Products Change - Your Thoughts on Why?

I have noticed that often a product is honestly reviewed for that time period it is used, but that same person, including me, can change their opinion of that same product later on.

I got to thinking about this when reading the topic called, Zyex D'Addario String Review. I got to thinking about this after reading @Fiddlerman's comment in response to a comment by @Gordon Shumway. Fiddlerman had changed his opinion from what he thought years ago.

I got to thinking. Have any of you fell in love, or just in like, of a product, or didn't like a product, and then changed your mind? The product itself doesn't matter, but you can mention it, if you want. The reasons for the change of opinion would be of interest.

I was also thinking about why this would be so, especially with instruments. My thinking is:

1. You changed the instrument itself and the item does not work as well with that instrument

2. You changed some part of your setup

3. You changed your bow

4. Your playing, itself, has changed - for better or worse 😂

5. Maybe, you moved and your acoustics are different?

Can you think of anything else that could cause this, other than manufacturer making, even the slightest, of changes?

I have changed my opinion of some things I used to use. The most recent is the chinrest. I loved the chinrest I was using on all my instruments. The issue was that I was changing the way I hold my violin and viola. I wanted to look at the fingerboard less, and the sheet music more. The chinrest I was using did not allow that very comfortably. So, I guess, I still like the chinrest, it just does not suit me any longer.

The current chinrest suits me just fine on both the viola and violin, Holstein Freedom. I think it is the less bulky size and smooth roundness of the edges that is allowing me to do what I need to do.

Now the change from dislike to like. This is not an exact change of opinion, but there are similarities to my eyes. I hate the Guarneri chinrest. It is uncomfortable no matter how I hold the violin and viola. All the instruments seem to come with that, and honestly, I don't think many people like it. What surprises me, is that to my eye, the Holstein Freedom resembled it and I put off trying it for quite a while.

It wasn't until I wanted to spend less time looking down the fingerboard that I decided to try it. It is nothing like the Guarneri when used. Although my distaste for the Guarneri has not changed, my opinion of trying chinrests that remind me of the Guarneri has changed. But, I have no thoughts of changing from my Holstein Freedoms. So, in a way it is a change from dislike to like, as far as shape or misconception is concerned.

Just a note, this topic is not intended as a review of products, although, some posts may end out that way in order to explain why opinions change.

I haven't seen Pierre's response yet - things disappear off the bottom of the page every time I go away for the weekend!

Yeah, I found it, thanks.

It wasn't hard for me to guess Pierre's response.

I'll stick with Dominants in future, I guess. I'm happy with them (they're supposedly Itzak Perlman's favourites). Although I've also got some Tonicas that need using up.

Naturally, @Fiddlerman didn't mislead anyone - it's the nature of anything on the internet. At least Pierre's review is dated (and it's up to readers to bear the date in mind). There's plenty of undated stuff on the internet. That's when it gets tricky.

That is the thing with reviews, especially musical instruments and accessories. They can be outdated easily, and are really user dependent.

Does anyone add a date to their reviews? Maybe I will start, so it is visible when read.

As bowed string instrumentalists, how many of you take stock with written reviews and how many rely in verbal from people you know? I am not taking a poll, I am just wondering how we all use reviews and how much stock we out in what we read about an item. What do you look for in a review? This might help us write more useful reviews, too.

I view all reviews as opinions, so all are important food for thought.

Dates are on posts - I take them into consideration.

For me, think it's the issues/problems I'm trying to analyze that can result in a sharper focus on a product - so, my reviews are only relevant to that situation, at that moment in time.

Down the road, when something isn't an issue/problem anymore, maybe I see the whole situation differently - so, my perspective on a product might change, too.

@Gordon Shumway - Glad that you realize that I didn't mislead anyone. 😁

I try to do the opposite. It's not the first time that I notice a change in strings. I don't know if some string companies are changing their products without talking about it.

Like violins and ukes.

I had tried d'Addario guitar (or were they uke?) strings years ago and didn't like them much.
