Funny, I know exactly what you mean
. The one thing I would change about my life is never having studied music academically from an early age consistently to the present day. I would change that in a hurry.
I've dabbled in painting and photography, sculpture, maths, electronics, modern languages, and even attempted philosophy, when all along I should have been studying for music theory, and practice exams and getting to grips with my favourite instruments, violin guitar and recorder and voice.
Oh well...
I could do the gardening course

I would love the ability to function on less sleep. I would use all those lost hours to study music, art and history.

Yes I agree. Kindness is a rare gift that does not need to be learned and living with regret can really weigh heavily on the people around you especially those closest to you. I agree that to be a kind and giving person is more important than everything else.
Fiddlerman I can recommend the Open University for Chinese. I recently spent a year with them learning Mandarin. There's also the international social network for language learners http://www.livemocha.com/ which offers some free courses in Chinese and Spanish as well as many others which you can manage in your own time.
I'm doing a lot of soul searching at the moment, hence the random question. I think this is a good place for sharing thoughts on all things music and otherwise. A really cool place to be.

CatMcCall, I'll second that! Way too much sleeping in the past years. Lethargy, and apathy and all the other thy -s that keep you from doing what you were born to do.
I'm done doing that, that's for sure..

It's really too bad that it takes some of us so very long to really internalize what it is to be a good, useful person who takes joy in the little things every day that are what makes up the "real" part of our lives. So much time gets wasted (speaking only of myself here) with all the crap that doesn't even matter if you take the time to think honestly about it.
I have to say that being kind to others doesn't always work out in a way that is healthy for your true Self (again, speaking only of myself here) and years can be lost by striving to do the Right Thing in a hopeless situation. I guess that's where the regret that you spoke of comes in...
Let's all get out our fiddles and practice those blues away!

Is it possible to hook up more than two people via Skype? That would be an interesting way to jam!

A very good question. For myself, having perused all the posts here briefly, I have to say, I would want to be more one-pointed in my focus on music, any music, as in making music, not just listening. Active involvement in anything creative, building instruments, playing them. I think it would be a much kinder world if more people were involved in making music. Somehow it just brings us all together. They say youth is wasted on the young. To a large degree I have to agree. Young people have so much potential, but don't know how to use their time wisely, as a rule. Having said this, I still consider myself young, relatively speaking, since I know that if I am lucky some day I will look back and remember how "young" I was now. We all have only one thing... time. That's all we really have. How we use it is important. I would say, I want to try to be more focused. It's so easy to want to relax and put something off for another day. Television, video games, facespace etc. it can be all very addictive. I found for myself, it's only when you don't have any focus, when you don't have a "life", that's when you succumb to these mind-numbing so-called activities. The hardest thing for me to do was to make a decision what I wanted to do with my time. You have to accept the idea that you are limited, that you will not be able to do everything. You have to choose. Now I know, I would choose music. It's the best... Art's cool, too. But for me, maybe just as a hobby!
Love, Tilly

double kisses for me to see something really exciting developing from this post. I love the positivity and the kinship here. I also really like what is being said about regret and giving. It's discussion forums like this that rekindles the faith in fellow humans around the world.
Focus is without doubt the most important point made here by Tilly. Without it as Jean says even acts of kindness can be misplaced.
I believe Fiddlerman you were very focused when you set up this web site, and I for one have no regrets in finding you.
Thank you everyone for sharing so far.

I'm with you anji ... this is the BEST site.
I'm getting excited about trying something out with all of you as a group. It might get me motivated to practise more (wouldn't want to be embarassed).
I've never been into Christmas music, but I'd love to give it a go.

If you think you can, or you think you can't, you're probably right.
