This thread has an interesting segue (not the two-wheeled transport, which are a kick in the ass btw), and not that the original thought of this thread isn't totally interesting, lol; but the concept of traveling with your violin.

I just got back from Hawaii on Monday and my flight back was the first time, in 40yrs of flying that I'd ever seen a violin brought into the cabin of a plane.  It was GREAT to see, because I had the same concerns about traveling with one; I'd never do it because I feel about the delicacy of my violin as I do of my computer or camera; I'd NEVER port either of those in cargo.

This violin (4/4) fit just fine in the overhead and nobody, including the crew, had any problem with it being stowed there.  So I'd say it's a very doing thing.

A lot of people on this site surely travel with their violins, any advice/experience???

I read somewhere when he travels by commercial air that David Garrett buys 2 seat tickets (next to each other). One for him, one for his $3.2 million dollar Strad! Buckleup baby... I bet David takes the window seat!crossedfingers

If I had a $3.2M violin...I would buy it a seat in first class as well.  My "carry on" would be worth more than half the peoples cars!!  That'll be two First class seats for myself and Ole Roy! (Ole Roy is the name of my cheapo violin.)

Hmm.. If I had a $3.2M violin, I think it would probably never leave the heavily guarded underground vault.  I'd just live in the vault and play it.

Or a more probable scenario.. I'd sell the thing, since I'd probably never dare to play it anyway.  Then buy an assortment of nice violins that cost $1,000 to a few thousand.. and buy the plane so I could make my own rules about how my violins ride on it.  LOL

If I had a $3.2M violin, it would have it's own plane.

I almost always travel with my violin and I have never stowed it in cargo and always have a carry on bag or luggage as well. So far noone has ever been able to keep me from bringing it on-board. Fortunately there are new laws that help us musicians out.
