Hi,

I spend quite a bit of time here on the forum enjoying being a member but I'd like to ocassionally relax doing a bit of reading from a magazine. Can anyone suggest a good violin magazine I could subscribe to having it delivered to our door please. I'm in the UK.

Kind regards, Colin.

Retired,

I have no idea about this magazine or if it is a available in UK but here is one:

Fiddler Magazine

It is an in print with an online (e-magazine). The link above will get you the home page. Just click the link in the side menu bar you see there for subscription information.

Try googling violin magazines, fiddle magazines, violin magazines in UK, fiddle magazines in UK.

Hi,

Many thanks @stringy for both your useful replies; last night I bought a copy of "Gone" Kym Min through eBay it only cost £3.56; the reviews confirm as you say it's a good read. I've just spent a bit of time browsing the web for violin magazines and once again @stringy I've selected your recommendation and have just subscribed for one year to "Strad" magazine at a cost of £69.95 inc delivery.

Thanks Mouse for your useful suggestions; I've done as you kindly suggest and have spent time browsing; I decided to go with "Strad" magazine this has 12 issues per year whereas "Fiddler" magazine only has four issues per year. Strad is delivered from High Wycombe here in the UK for anyone interested; I paid as a one off payment not setting up a direct debit; I can renew each year. Fiddler magazine contact is in Los Altos, CA  94023.

I do appreciate every reply and information/suggestions I receive with thanks.

Kind regards, Colin.

Hi,

The book "Gone" by Min Kym you kindly suggested @stringy arrived yesterday and what a fascinating but sad story; I read it to page #25 and was very moved indeed. Born in South Korea but brought up in the UK what a huge contrast in cultures Min faced in her early years.

I'm resisting the temptation of reading it all at once; it's a story to be enjoyed spread over a few days.

It's many years since I read a book; I've owned a computer for 23 years and this opened up the world of knowledge. Most of my reading was technical subjects and I think the last volumes I read were the expensive five volumes by Charles Holtzapffel; three of the volumes seen here;

Thanks once again @stringy.

Kind regards, Colin.

Glad you are enjoying it, the story speeds up and becomes extremely interesting as the book goes on. It would make an amazing film I think you will agree when you have read the whole  thing.

Hi,

Thanks @stringy I'm now on page #117 and really getting into Min's fascinating life story; I can't help feeling sorry for Min because as a violin prodigy she's missed out completely on her childhood and will never get it back; this I believe also applies to any such child; Bron and I often see little children being pushed forward such as this delightful little chap;

I'm unsure about the rights or wrongs of this but surely a child deserves a childhood to intermix with other children not be shut away isolated only to be brought out at times on display; Min realized this when money came into it.

When I started work a lifetime ago as an apprentice I had to bring my wage packet home unopened to be given a bit of pocket money by my parents until I rebelled at the age of 17 then I had to pay quite a large amount for board. My childhood ended at my first pay packet when I suddenly became a cash machine.

Kind regards, Colin.
