I have always seen the Fiddlerman Forum as a bowed string community - a family of bowed string instrumentalists that enjoy playing music, with similar experiences.
Many people start with Violin before moving on to playing Viola, Cello, Bass or other bowed string instruments - like Hardanger Fiddle, Nyckelharpa or one of the Viols. It may not be very noticeable on this forum, yet - but I think 5 and 6-string bowed instruments are becoming more popular, too.
Music theory... Learning Principles... Parties & Projects... Music & Genres... Recording & Performing... Many Topics are shared across the spectrum of ALL Bowed String Instruments.
I think it's important to learn what makes playing each bowed string instrument different, but maybe more important to understand what we ALL have in common.
If this forum was laid out like all the other forums I've previously checked out, I could easily understand the need for a separate site, BUT THIS FORUM IS DIFFERENT... BETTER - easier to navigate & find related discussions/information!
So, why can't the few topics on the Violaman sister site be moved to THIS forum?
Hasn't anyone, other than myself, learned & expanded their perspectives, maybe even considered learning to play another instrument - by reading related posts here?

As part of my own learning, I’ve gotten a small viola (14”) a few months ago. I really don’t feel the need to go over to the other site to discuss anything about it when I can just do it here.
As with other topics on this site, having visibility on a broad range of topics regarding string instruments is going to have broad appeal to a larger audience—I don’t see the benefit of a separate location that only serves to segregate.
I tend to assess the pro’s & cons of things. I see the cons of a separate site: divided community, increase maintenance/administration/cost. But I really don’t see the pro’s of it. If there was a lot of traffic over there to indicate otherwise, it would be one thing, but I don’t think that is the case.
Perhaps the folks who are logging in over there can weigh in?

I dont even think of the forum as strictly concerning bowed instruments anymore. I think of it as a place to discuss learning music/playing instruments. And in a way with fiddlershop adding fretted instruments may be a plus. Bowed instruments, especially violins, I think will always be the majotity here but its nice to be able to discuss all things music without concern. I suppose thats acceptable?

Seems the name 'Violaman' should attract attention - and Pierre does have great video tutorials & info there!
As far as discussions - sorry, I don't see anything said at Violaman that isn't discussed here, or helped here. And since there's active people who play Violin, plus also Viola still visiting here, it just feels kinda weird (for me) to even consider splitting off.
Both Forum names are very exclusive at 1st glance. Maybe down the road... is it possible this 'Fiddlerman Forum' site name could 'GROW' a little?
FIDDERMAN BOWED STRING FAMILY? 🤗 FIDDLERMAN PLUS? 😳
Violin, Viola, Cello - their own language? I dunno, seems too close to being like if I was learning piano, it wouldn't feel like a completely different instrument just because I change from a 3-octave keyboard to a Baby Grand. Some differences - yes, of course, but hopefully you get my drift. Btw, I'm NOT comparing the difficulty of learning any bowed string instrument to learning piano. Strictly my opinion, but seems the sheet music notation is the only big difference... or is it, considering music transcription software available nowadays?
Makes me wonder how people feel learning to play different size instruments within woodwind, or horn 'families'...
Guess it's pretty obvious by now I believe videos & links can be great conversation starters in posts, inspire experimentation & possibly help clarify procedures and concepts. The most important (to me) is member's ideas & opinions - not just sharing raw information, but experiences - member's stories of music discoveries, growth and frustration.
Very understandable if people aren't interested in all music topics, or don't wish to engage - maybe don't have time to.
