Will learning cello mess up playing violin?  Can my head do both?

@mryikes

I had a brief time where I had a Cello.  I know that knowing how to play violin helped me play the cello.  For some reason reading the Cello music was easier for me that VIOLA..... Anyway... I know this doesn't answer whether it will screw up your violin playing.

I was a beginner violinist (still am in a way) when I got the cello so there wasn't anything to mess up.

I loved the Cello.. I regret selling my Cello.   I loved it and it was soOOOOO much more forgiving than my violin.

So can I ask... did you get a cello?

Have a great day.

Not unless you try to put the cello under your chin.

A positive attitude may not solve all your problems, but it will annoy enough people to make it worth the effort. ~Herm Albright

Thanks for the replies.  And no Toni, I haven't bought one yet, but I'm in the market.  It would be a whole lot easier, if there was someplace that had audio samples of all the cellos.

And Uzi, I don't think I'd stoop so low as to put my chin on a cello!

I have never tried to play a cello, so take this with a grain of salt, but when I took up the violin after playing the guitar for many years, it did mess up my guitar playing for a while, but only for playing notes, not chords. I found that I had to shift my mind from violin mode to guitar mode. The different ways that the two instruments are held seems to help, so that might help you with transitioning to cello. Interestingly, taking up the mandolin in recent years and learning mandolin chords has not messed up my guitar chord playing.

When the work's all done and the sun's settin' low,

I pull out my fiddle and I rosin up the bow.
