I wish I had been able to get more music education growing up. Pretty much listened to 78's, 45's and LP's at home. When the older brother who owned the stereo married and moved out, I used babysitting money to buy my own stereo. I enjoyed it, but the only grade that actually taught music theory was 7th grade music with Mr H.

Note, you can tell I liked it, I still remember his name and sitting next to Connie as we tried to work out tasks he requested. For instance, writing the musical notes on staff paper to the Star Spangled Banner as they sounded to us. Well, Connie new it because she was in band and had played it. I told her she cheated. LOL  She was next to the wall, front row, and I sat next to her. I remember the room, what Mr H looked like, the fact he liked Blood, Sweat and Tears, and we had the same album of theirs, my fav was Spinning Wheel, as was his. We examined the song in class. That was the best year of music in my school years. He left the school district a couple years later. We lost a really good junior high school music teacher.

Second best was 9th grade chorus. We had a great chorus instructor. He also delved in to music theory. He quit teaching after my 9th grade year and joined the FBI. Yep. He ended out specializing in helping kids as an FBI profiler. Makes sense since he worked with kids in school. I saw him on TV over the years. Pretty cool. Nice guy. I guess I can forgive him for my music theory classes coming to a halt. He did a lot of good and was sought after for his work. He was thought highly of, and is now retired. Enjoy your retirement. Well earned.

His replacement did no theory. We just learned the songs. It was fun, but the learning part no longer existed. There were no formal music classes offered.

My point? It is rather a dull point. It is so much easier to learn when younger! Maybe the gray hairs sap your ability.

I hear you. Wish I kept up with the early lessons. Now I'm not sure if it's the grey hairs, the CRS, arthritis, or just the pure exhaustion that slows me down.

I think we should be born a little more knowledge than we are born with, kf you can call it knowledge. Maybe, we need more than a lifetime to learn everything we want to learn.

I haven't played for a little while. I have been extremely busy trying to get two specific cards made for the girls. I was on a time crunch. They wanted Allicorns on them. I have them done. Finished today. I didn't have exactly what they wanted for the card, so I had to come up with something.

I tried a unicorn die and gluing a butterfly wing on it. The girls would have loved it, but it did not look nice and took forever and I needed to make two.

Then a friend in Florida who does cards, came to the rescue. She found a stamp of an allicorn. Then I had to wait for it to be delivered. Then I had to decide what to do with it. Figured it all out. I am good now.

I used a magic iris with the Allicorn stamp. They will love it.

Hopefully, I can get back to it tomorrow or the next day. I miss playing it, but the girls come first. The smiles and excitement when they get the cards I make them says it all.

I did try violin for a short time in 4th grade, liked we learned about some 'Classics' of music in Jr. High & even dancing (and the music important for the type) was part of our time in gym class.  When I could choose classes in High School, I probably would've chosen art over music, but couldn't even do that because I had such a full schedule geared to get me into college... also started working when I was 14.

Can't overlook age-related ailments & medications that can take a toll as we get older - pain definitely zaps my motivation (which wasn't an issue when I was younger).

..idk, I was too busy with other things when I was a kid.  I have a little more control over my life now, but a lot still had to happen for 'me' to be at the right place in my life to start learning to play the violin AND stick with it (almost 4 years, thanks to everyone here)! 🤗

Yep. If we knew then what we know now. 😁

The upside is that it gives me something to learn now. Always find the upside.

Yes, I also wish I had started earlier, or perhaps had been able to devote more time, energy and attention along the way to my music.

But it won’t do me any good to dwell on any of that. The fact is that I am extremely fortunate to be able to work every day to improve whatever fiddling skill that I do have.

I understand that there are some 7.9 billion people in the world now. The great, great majority of those people do not have the luxury of ever even picking up a fiddle, not to mention working to improve their vibrato, string crossing, third position, whatever.

There is no question that the 6 year-old starting with Suzuki will advance far more quickly than I do. But I doubt if that kid appreciates the opportunity as much as I do!
