long title.. hopefully explained fully what this topic is. If you have some sort of using youtube tip, drop it here. IM SURE this type of topic has been created before by others... i probably have one..
I use youtube videos for practice from time to time. one thing i didnt like about the android youtube app is that you could only change the video speed in increments of .25. they updated it sometime recently and now it works like the desktop version. more granular speed divisions.
look under the cog when you touch a playing video.

I use YouTube frequently, mostly to learn new music. Multiple repetitions get the tune into my head, and then the slow-down feature helps me find the landing notes and then work through any passages that are difficult to figure out.
(I have largely quit using sheet music, except as a reminder. That might be different if I had reasonable sight-reading skills -- but I don’t. I admire those who can produce real music from a sheet of paper but, alas, that ain't me.)
Later on, when I pretty much know a tune, I sometimes study various interpretations of the tune to discover interesting licks and nuances. I’m just a hack fiddler, so there are many others who can provide good models for me.
I do not like instructional videos, where a teacher takes you slowly through each phrase. This is excruciating and mind-numbing. I can learn faster and better with my own process.
Instructional videos that focus specifically on technique can be helpful. Some teachers have better explanations and demonstrations than others, and it’s usually easy to find the ones that are most useful for me.
The intrusive ads are terrible. I recognize that YouTube needs to generate revenue, but gratuitously dropping ads into the middle of a performance is just evil -- it destroys continuity and ruins good music. This is greed over art -- they should be ashamed of themselves.
I don’t know if YT has some sort of subscription that would eliminate those ads, but I would consider it.
All in all, YouTube is a useful tool for me. I’m a self-taught and self-directed music student, and YT is an essential resource.
Hope this is useful for somebody. Thanks Rusty for getting me thinking about this.

Strabo, you tube do have a subscription so you dont have to watch the ads, dont know how much they charge. The reason they drop totally unrelated ads in the middle is precisely to annoy you and get you to pay the subscription.
By the way if there is a vid you want to watch, but dont want to watch a 2 minute ad beforehand. Click on the vid, the instant the ad comes on swipe it away and click on the vid again, you have to do this about 4 times then the vid plays, seems drawn out but in actual fact it never takes me longer than about 3 seconds, I click with left thumb on vid and swipe with right thumb;)

GREAT IDEA (Thank You)!
I'm usually concerned with so many 'other' things - jeez, hadn't even thought about searching for an alternative/FREE adblocker! 🙄
I admit I don't like pulling up YT videos on my phone because ads are more of a nuisance (can't see any detail in such small images anyway). At least on my laptop, when an ad pops up, it's easy to click on another video, then hit the 'back' button. I'm sure one day they'll figure a way to prevent this.
🤔... idk, thwarting the YT ads has always felt like a game I've derived some sadistic pleasure from - I might miss it.
4K Downloader Plus is a good way to download YouTube videos (and then you can watch them ad-free).
I paid $15 for a lifetime license for PC a few years ago (different prices now include ones for various platforms; Linux, Android, etc.,), but the free Plus version works just as well for individual videos. Site with info is here:
