I have to admit it's really rare I find an "Old Time" or "Blue Grass" fiddle tune that I say to myself, "PUT DOWN WHAT YOU'RE DOING & LEARN THIS TUNE!" - "Cluck Old Hen" is one of them! Here's a tutorial for this VERY fun tune.
Does anyone already play this? GregW?
If so, which way do you play it?
- Emily

I still have this tune on my MPL but haven't tried it, yet.
Did run across a great series of 4 video tutorials by Lauren Rioux (JamWithLauren) that cover everything from the basic "Cluck, Old Hen", to jamming with the melody, chords and singing the lyrics so others can join in!
Here's the 1st tutorial in the series.
The other 3 can be found here.

Here's some different versions of the lyrics to play with!

...cluck, cluck - when we were ruff'n it, shortly after our Daughter was born, I made Kevin do the head chopp'n - for dinner. 😖😳😏

Emily @ELCBK , I play this in the old timey style. Love the possibilities for variation and the ability to grow with it.
Find yourself the You Tube video of Berklee (yes, spelled that way in MA) College of Music’s Cluck Old Hen Project. Really great to watch!

There are many different tutorials for this on YouTube.
Here's a VERY, VERY SIMPLE, straight forward, tutorial version of "Cluck Old Hen" from Lauren (The Tune Project), that Beginners can learn!
Check out the previous posts for lyrics and more options.
Sheet music can be found at thesession.org
...fun little tune to try!

@Unfretted -
Sorry, I missed your post - really glad to find out someone has played this!
a Party? (hint, hint)
The "Berklee Commencement Concert: Cluck Old Hen" is a GREAT video - lots of fun!
Do you ever take turns (like mentioned in my 2nd post) with others - playing the chords, then melody & singing?
...this tune always puts a smile on my face!
- Emily

@JohnG -
Don't get discouraged!
That's the reason for the tutorial in Post No.4 - you might be able to follow along with this one!
Even though you have a Viola, you can still follow her same fingering without transcribing to alto clef - just play this on your A & D string (instead of the Violin E & A string).
It will sound just as good in a different key!
I move Violin tunes to a lower string all the time, just because I like how it sounds (can play Violin or Viola on my 5 string)!
Slow the tutorial video down & loop it - for more help.
You already have a good ear for playing!
Give it a go!

Emily @ELCBK,
The only party I’ll be having in the near term is a big celebration when I get rid of this ipad, which is close to unusable ever since the os update. I can’t video or upload a party until then. Wish I could.
Glad you found the Berklee Commencement performance! I didn’t mean to be rude by not searching out the link and posting it, but again my internet experience is impaired right now. It really is so great to watch! Fun and inspiring!
You asked do I sing it? 😅😂🤣🎶 No way! Sadly, a decent singing voice is not a gift I have, but have longed for all my life. Yes, I do play this tune with others, and I play melody with slides and sometimes get a little quirky ( on guitar, too). Right now, I’m working on chorded double stops bowed as fiddle backup, and can’t wait to add that dimension to this tune.
I always enjoy your contributions and unbounded enthusiasm in this forum! 😊

@Unfretted , @ABitRusty -
I've only played this thru once, so not ready to Party with it, yet
(playing around with the rhythm sounds great)
- will try to get something recorded today for a general Hornpipe Party, instead!
Btw, I just use my smartphone to record/send to YouTube.
Really appreciate your support.
Keeps me motivated!
THANK YOU!

Hey @ABitRusty, I like your creative approach. A bit of funk, almost, or the ambiance of a cigar-smoke-filled piano bar.Funky Old Hen? 😄
