It's been a while
I used to play the violin as a child for many years but having left school haven't picked it up for the best part of 20 years. Looking for tips

Hi all,

I wanted to document my progress to a) get some advice b) see my improvements.

https://1drv.ms/v/s!AlKdHoJyqB.....e3gVl5S2xw

This is my first video today although was a bit pushed for time to redo it, so, apologies for the cuss in the middle. The bridge is not good and held in place with bits of card and most of the strings have been replaced although they have been in the case for some time. I will be taking to a shop soon for a service, bit of regluing, new strings and bridge and looking forward to how it sounds after that. As for the violin don't know much about it.

If anyone can shed some tips, suggest things to practice would be much appreciated.

Thanks

Gruff

That's all nice and great but we prefer youtube links. You can publish them unlisted and they will most likely not be seen by so many people other than us. :) Any youtube link you post here will embed automatically.
Thanks for the post. You get a share a video badge.

Hello and what a good start you already have.  I recognized the song right away.  That's a good thing.  Good job.  Even as an advanced beginner I shy away from advice as I am still "conquering demons."

I did recently read and hear Itzak P giving advice.  I can't state it exactly, but he said to practice slow, and he said to not let a part or section be played incorrectly.  Break it down into section and play it correctly over and over.  He cautioned about playing it incorrectly because we train our ears to hear it incorrectly.

Well he said it so much better than that.   So my advice with that piece would be to break it down as it get complicated...and play 4-8 measures slowly and then speed them up as you get them perfected.

Welcome to the forum and I LOVE that piece ... it IS on my list and you have provided inspiration by sharing.

@Fiddlerman  he needs a badge. :)

Welcome to the forum, I so look forward to meeting you more.

Thanks for your kind words, I will look up Itzak, sounds like he has some sound advice. I had a major case of camera shy when I did the video and I just couldn't keep my bowing arm from shaking. I've mainly been practicing the middle bit but really need to work on the changes. I will go over it slowly this week. I have been doing that with some scales and a tuner in front of me. Trying to hear the right sound and rely on my brain to put my fingers in the right place.

I really want to learn Chi Mai, I bet @fiddlerman could come up with a great arrangement as a community project ;) and thank you for the badge and the site has been really handy in remembering the basics.

Next video will put up on youtube, originally I only intended to send it to my mum but this seems like a nice community :)

Ahhh - welcome @gruff / aka Gareth - my apologies on the chat  - I was for some reason convinced you were a "returning member after some leave-of-absence" - but now I recall ...

Two things -

(1) GREAT to see yet another UK member - been down that way ( Cornwall ) many years back...  real nice part of the country, and enjoyed it a lot....

(2) Your video - I can't get it - it appears to be "on the so called cloud" ( well, I can get it if I wait forever - but when faced with that  - I'm sorry - I give up ).   Sure - not YOUR fault it;s our UK infrastructure....

I am, like quite a lot of us in the UK in rural areas, still stuck with 512k so-called-broadband (and not likely to ever get anything better in the next 20 years despite all the talk about it, but that's politics, and I don't do that here )

That's why YouTube "works" ( kind of ) - because it adapts to the viewer's connection speed...  99+ percent of the time any YT video I watch streams at 144p by default because it recognises the listening-client-speed - although even then at its lowest rate - it hesitates ....   but it is WAY WAY better than trying to stream a 300Mbyte video - that DOES take an hour for a few mins of high def.... Really... not kidding....

I have your vid downloading now....  yes - just checked - it is 245 Mbytes for a 2 minute video - it's NOT your fault - it's "my" problem, sure, it's where I choose to live....   it will take an hour, give or take...

And once again - sorry for confusing you with someone else !   LOL   (It happens !)

Thanks Billy, it is no problem, I will put the future ones up on youtube. Were quite lucky for a rural area, down here, even though we don't have piped gas to the village (and never will) we do have fibre optic and 4g mobile network even though were pretty much surrounded by sea or river on 3 sides.

Look forward to being a fixture round here ;)

Holey Schmoley 4g ?  What;s THAT ??????   Hahahaha - folks keep telling me - use mobile instead of wired internet !   LOL - we got 2g Vodafone here - being the only cellular carrier - 100kb - it's worse than my 512k hahahaha !

And heyyy - sure glad to have another UK-side member on-board !!!!!

Keep 'em coming Gareth !   @gruff

Not made the trip to Scotland but would love to go up to the Isle of Skye when they light it all up one year. Are there many of us from this side on here?

LMAO - saying nothing....  better not to... hahahahahaha - that will be lost on our American friends !

Not made the trip to Scotland but would love to go up to the Isle of Skye when they light it all up one year. Are there many of us from this side on here?

Ha - I'm just across the water from Skye - more or less - in the far north-west corner of the UK

Well - we have a few UK members - it's hard to make a call on it - but - the forum itself has over 3500 registered members and - well - we see perhaps 20 to 40 active posters.  OK - that doesn't mean anything "bad" - folks can log-in "incognito" at any time and appear as guests - so it is always hard to tell who is a member or who is a guest when I see 45 guests on-line, but I'm the only "member"  ( LOL - yeah - a bit like Streetjelly - it's all USA side largely - wrong timezone ! )

To answer your question - I would have a guess at ( by the posts I see - and I catch almost all of them ) that very few of the posts are UK side ( mine excluded because I post regularly ) and would put the count at around a dozen....

It's much the same on StreetJelly ( and I see you are happy to play and record your progress )- could I maybe convince you to take part in our "Strings on Sunday" live get-together on http://www.streetjelly.com ?  LOL - go on....   it's FUN !!!!!

Hahahah ( another lamb to the slaughter ! )  Seriously though - no pressure....

  thumbs-up

Ah well will try and spread the word, know a couple of people.

Hadn't heard of street jelly before but seems much like an idea a mate an I had several years back - we were going to call it jam preserves, internet wasn't really up to it back then though.

Give me a month or so and I'll probably be up for joining you though.

StreetJelly is fun, and laid back :) I usually screw up every song I play, and nobody has boo'd me via the little chat box yet, haha. I'm sure they are rolling their eyes, but I can't see them so I don't care, haha.

Sometime in January we're hoping to put together a StreetJelly event of everyone just playing all beginners tunes. That might be a perfect testing ground for you :)

StreetJelly is fantastic for so many reasons. I encourage you to try it. It's great for your nerves, for learning to perform, and for advice (if you ask for it).

I'll definitely give it a go, I've found the Logitech C920 for only £6 more than the C615 so will order it tomorrow. Haven't managed to find myself a teacher yet so would be really helpful to me. I don't want to be getting any bad habits I will later regret.
