thumbs-upYou know what you're doing wrong or not totally correct so I won't reiterate that here.

Here's a thought... try this next time.

1- Take a chair from the kitchen table and sit in it, they don't have any arms so you won't hit your elbow on anything. Sit in that chair and play... don't dance around. Some of your arm bowing motion gets lost in the body movement so you have a really hard time compensating for it. A little movement is impossible not to do. See what that "body isolation" does for your tone and bowing.

2- After the video is done, WATCH IT. You will be shocked at how things sound so different from the two different locations. First location: right next to your ear (sounds great huh?) Second location: across the room a few feet away, hmmm, need to work on that part, and that part, and oh my that part doesn't sound at all like I thought it did... (Those are your thoughts as your mind races when listening and watching yourself.) I practice the same piece 2 dozen times and then when I finally do a vid, realize I'm far from perfect. If I can play identical to another youtube vid of someone far better than me playing the same piece and not hear different notes between the two, I know I've got it! That's the part I'm working on now...and forever.

3- Don't let #2 get in the way of making another video. It's all about watching yourself and making the adjustments, not seeing your faults and giving up. Nothing as beautiful and grand as violin music was ever achieved by anything except hard work and perseverance.

Nice job... On both pieces.

Thank you Den.  Been practicing in the chair...or motionless ..while standing. It seems to be good for concentration.  I am not a good enough player yet to let the music carry me away...so good point on staying on task.

:) Cheers

This applies especially to you learning the Minuet, but it also applies generally.

First I would listen to others playing this piece on youtube, and hum along with the recordings while tapping out the beat and maybe reading the sheet.  That is to learn what it should sound like and how the notes fit the beat.

Then turn off the recording, and, with a metronome at tempo, hum and tap and maybe read along.

Then do the same with the metronome set at say half tempo.

Then I would play it at half tempo or as slow as you need to and as many times as you need to in order to keep the beat and play in tune.

Then start increasing the tempo by increments, but not until you can play in tune and on time at the slower tempos.

Don't play the tune for now---play the notes of the tune.

Thank  you @RosinedUp . I never even thought about humming the tune with the metronome. (hum, tap and read along)...exactly I think that is a brilliant technique as well as your thoughts on how to go about learning the piece.  Thank you so much.

Oh gosh @Fiddlerman really???  That provides so much encouragement.  I am practicing more than ever and sometimes I feel it is not paying off.

Thank you!

Whenever you feel it's not paying off, just go back to your older videos. :-)

@Fiddlerman thanks.  That is a good tip.  I did listen to my first Jam session with your Twinkle video... Ack...

i am learning 3rd position.... I have studied for two days.  I had a consultation over your Swan Lake sheet with my violin friend who has been playing for 22 years ( as well as@butterystuffs on chat. I feel confident that I have what it takes to put in the work and time required to progress.  Thank you so much.

i am so ready to move forward.

@coolpinkone : Glad you were able to use my (limited) guidance towards your own progress. I myself have been able to learn something out of it... win-win for the both of us :)

@ButteryStuffs thank you for helping me measure by measure.  It really helped me to discuss it.  For those wondering, Butters was helping me understand the 2nd and third position notations on the sheet music for Swan Lake.  Trust me it took patience on his part.   Thanks again.

Here is an update.

I know about the timing getting funky...and it sped up...and I know there are not any Eflats in the piece.  :)

Thanks for the post Toni,
Good work.
You are right about the timing though. You just need to learn to count while playing. Have you ever looked at the rhythm game?

@Fiddlerman

Thank you for listening.  It pains me to even hear it a few days later.  I hope to have a nice practice with metronome this afternoon.  Thanks again for your advice.

Toni
