I too am on Minuet 1.  Mine is from Suzuki Book 1.  I am learning to use my pinky when it is called for and trying to bow bigger.  But with bigger bows is coming hitting strings I don't want to hit.

I know - some notes out of tune, hitting strings I don't want to hit, not holding some notes long enough, didn't play softer in part B.  Did I miss anything else?

Sounds pretty good but don't rush the difficult parts as if speed is your friend...it's not.  At this point, intonation habits are important.

@Oliver Thanks!!  It felt as though I was playing very, very painfully slow.  I was surprised at the speed when I played it back.

LOL!  And just the other day I passed on my Teach's suggestion to coolpinkone - play slow.

Actually, "speed" is not the most important word.  Your choice of speed should agree with your control.  When you are in control, speed just "happens".  If your present control level is now "slow", that's OK.

@MontrealMichell  Thanks!

@Oliver Oh My Goodness!  I am thicker headed then I thought.  You just now helped me understand this "speed" Issue.  Control!  I know exactly what you are saying. And possibly what others have been saying?

At times I have felt as though the music was pushing, dragging me through the song.

The music has been controlling me instead of me controlling the music!!

Sounded great to me Pat

I still have the problems that you mentioned but as time goes by they become less of an issue.

I would guess that even FM himself had similar problems in the early days :)

Very nice done, Schaick! If You want some advice - be attentive with the bow landing (0:17; 0:31; 0:58), try to do it as quiet as possible. Don't play it from the air. Put the bow down first and start the movement after that. It will allow You to make it more smooth.

I'm not familiar with this minuet and the bowing itself in that piece, so i apologize if i misheared something, those are just my suggestions.

@coolpinkone Thanks!

@Mad Wed Thank you for noticing that.  When I first started playing, I was doing that all the time.  Teach said to not worry about it and don't lose the technique.  That some violinist work to get that type of articulation.  BUT yes it should not be in this song.  It is always hard for me to get started with a song when I am recording.

Comes down to control again!!  And knowing when to use it.  Maybe with a song like Spotted Pony it might sound good?

I don't know what it is called but with the very first part of the down bow with pressure I grab the string, then ease off. Anyone know what it is called?  If not, I dub it - Doing The Schaick!!

Little detour here .......... I was impressed to read the Mad Wed remarks about "bow landing".  I'm impressed because it works and receives little attention.   However, this again is one of the topics of control.
