Don't worry too much about the pinky. It's great that you are thinking about keeping it close to the string but believe me when I tell you that I have seen incredible violinists that can't control their pinky's.
It's more important that you can get it down when you need to use it, put it down at a relatively correct spot and that it's comfortable to use.

That is good to know. I beleive that I have a "flying pinky" problem myself. I love the topic name @coolpinkone. The flying pinky sounds like a great name to call a rockband:)
