I am thinking of building a varnish dip tank for violin bows, and I was wondering what finish is customary?  All of my (inexpensive) bows appear to have a satin finish similar to boiled linseed oil.  Would a spar varnish or urethane finish be acceptable?

A spirit varnish would definitely be acceptable. With violins, the best result comes from oil varnish because it allows the wood to vibrate more but with bows, I don't think we need it to vibrate quite as much. Not entirely sure.

Our luthiers make their own varnish so I'm not really familiar with varnish brands.

We get a lot of stuff from Howard Core.
