That is fantastic. Thanks Kevin. Doesn't it depend a little on your fingerboard shape though? Maybe that is only with older fiddles.

This should really help the players that have had problems with bridges snapping. You feel like making a detailed instruction on how to cut one from scratch? I could put it up on a separate page on the site. If it isn't too much hassle of course.

I second that! A tutorial on how to cut a bridge would be great. If you could make it pretty understandable.

(I speak for myself, but pictures are beyond helpful when paired with an explanation!)

If you do not wish to Kevin, if anyone wishes to, that would be great as well!

On "Cheap eBay violins" … Just tell people they are like a Charlie Brown Christmas Tree.  With a little love, and some practice, they too can be made beautiful.

After Halloween I'll make something up to show how to fit a bridge.  I have some violins I'm working on and I'll need to fit them so I'll take pictures and describe what I'm doing.

Michael Darnton, a very well known luthier, has made select chapters of his upcoming book available online. The chapter on setup is a bit technical, but it covers all aspects of the ideal violin setup, including pegs, bridges, making a new nut or fingerboard, etc, etc. No pictures though. He has a wonderful blog with photos here.

ViolinBridges has an archive of bridge pictures from great makers.

Andrew Carruthers has a nice pictorial on bridge fitting.

Thanks for the links Cat,

Michael Darnton has great information but it can be done much clearer and with pictures for us to understand. Good for those of us who have never done anything like this before. Maybe Andrew Carruthers tutorial is good enough.
