I'm learning to play violin on my grandpa's violin. It doesn't sound too good, but it might just be me 😉

Or it might be because the sound post is at an angle and sits too far from the bridge.

Should I try to correct it myself, or do I need to bring it to a luthier?

Thanks.

Since you're just starting out, I would suggest taking it to a luthier and having them adjust it for you 🙂 That way they can also double check the rest of the set up for you. Starting out is hard enough, let alone starting out on an instrument that isn't set up properly, due to age of everything, etc.

Welcome to the violin, and the forum 🙂 Have fun!

timkoop, I can't say for certain that your instrument will sound good after fitting the sound post perfectly but I can say for certain that it's not possible to get a great sound with the post the way you describe it.
