took a chance on a bow stick stamped DODD

the pictures were dark and the head appeared to be possibly damaged. As you can see by these pictures2B3DA93B-AAE2-471A-A210-BEDF49C9B9D3.pngImage Enlarger1E026476-71C8-4069-BDC7-0DF8EFB21383.pngImage EnlargerF8898FFF-35FA-41D6-BC8E-272218231EAA.jpegImage Enlarger

i received the bow today and I’m pretty excited.

there is no head damage, it is just old liner on the bottom and some gummy glue on the sides.

the stick is a beautiful deep red pernambuco.  The build-up from years of use is crazy.

The nice thing about a Dodd bow is that he could not afford the nitric acid to turn the wood black.  Looks like a pretty stick.  This the year I hope to get a Cocker.

@steveduf , is the wood heavily worn in the mortise area or am I looking wrong at the photo?

cleaning up nicely, Steve... that could be quite a find you made there! Can't wait to hear what your resident specialist has to say about its vibes when it's ready to play violin-1267

@Irv

I actually believe it’s the pic and the cut... I tried two different frogs and both fit snug with good adjustment and no side slop.

btw bow weighs in at 47.8 grams with no grip, hair or tip.

measures right at 29” with frog.

Wonderful.  It looks like you took off enough rosin from that stick to keep Mack going for a year!

Curious. I used to do etching at night school, and, afaicr, nitric acid was the one most commonly used.

John Dodd (1752 in London – 1839 in Surrey) was the greatest English bowmaker before and until Tubbs

A whole different time frame than ours, what we take for granted was a luxury or not even available yet.

Fun fact of little importance.  Nitric acid was first obtained by grinding up the heads of ants.  I believe the ants spray it from glands as a defense (or offense) mechanism.

I went through my photo file of Dodd bows.  He often used a bulbous head.  3454C958-51FA-4418-9C1C-52EA055BE8C0.jpegImage EnlargerD3DC0E9F-15EE-4A0E-93B7-952B3209F1EB.jpegImage Enlarger

Lol, people have to take Mack and I with understanding...

you have a man who doesn’t play, relying on the expertise  of his 14 year old daughter...  We started doing this just over a year ago, we’ve come a long ways...
