Hey guys,

I'm looking for some pure grain alcohol to mix color for spirit based varnish. I don't want any type of denatured alcohol. This is what I've found is available so far.

Gem clear 190
Everclear 190
Ethanol 190

Non of these are available in Florida though. I can get them online but the shipping charges are way more than the actual product.

Any thoughts?

well, my extensive exerience with the shine arts is from watching Moonshiners on T.V. I would say build you a small still in your kitchen and run you a batch...even if you tried to boil down the already proofed alcohal.....you might splode yer kitchen! My advice is compare shipping costs to the cost of a rad road trip. If you choose the road trip remember this song

Do you know anyone in a state where Everclear is sold, such as Arizona? UPS can ship it without you having to declare what it is, just the cost of shipping the small bottle of it, that way shipping isn't very much. I have some Everclear I obtained that way (from a relative in Arizona).

I'll check in Pa and see if I can get you some

To buy it you need a special permit in Pa.  They only carry everclear 151

If you can find out if it's available in Maryland, Virgina, N. Carolina, South Carolina, or Geogia let me know and I'll try to pick up some on my trip to Florida.

I should arrive in Daytona on the 30th and leave on the 5th. I was thinking of driving down to  by you one day maybe the 2nd or 3rd. Hey what's another 4 hours of driving.

Shipping was a little more than the actual product but still OK.

IMG_20111231_144400-800x598.jpgImage EnlargerSI853399-600x800.jpgImage EnlargerActually making 190 proof is not that easy.

I have a very involved reflux still, also a permit to make ethanol, and getting over 186 proof requires 'drying' of the ethanol. The drying process can be using a molecular seive or redistilling in a closed loop system. I distill a 10 gallon mash every run I make and usually I recover about 18-20% of that as alcohol.

I use the full strength stuff to clean my bow hair and the strings of my violins as well.

My stainless reflux still will make 186 proof but after the first 2 qts of a 10 gallon run, the proof drops off quickly.

The next quarts (#3 and 4) are usually in the 175+proof range and the next ones drop from there to around 170 proof for the last quart of good stuff. You would require at least 170 proof to use it in an engine for fuel.

If you use a "pot still" like you see on Moonshiners without the "Thumper Keg" you'd be hard pressed to get better than 140-150 proof but it will have a lot of the flavors of the mash whereas a reflux still will take virtually all the flavor out of the ethanol. Using a T.K. will get you in the 160-170 proof range but it would require a really slow run.

That's just my professional opinion and observations from making the stuff in the real world and not on a TV show. LOL

Not legally anyway. But if you had a Stiller's lic/permit then i could ship and/or transfer any qty to you.
