I've had mandolin tuners on a fiddle. I like it a lot, but it becomes noticeably heavier in the wrong end. Machinery have more advantages than disadvantages compared to pegs though, so I'll probably install tuners on my big American walnut fivestring too. The pegs are badly fitted so I have to rely upon the fine tuners, which is also troublesome, because the top has an extreme arch. When I screw them all the way down, they rattle against the soundboard...
The added weight will be a bigger problem on this one compared to the old one. The body is too deep for a shoulder rest to be mounted, so already now I carry a lot of the weight with my left hand.
But I'll get used to that. Rock'n'roll hurts.

@Svento - I don't think extra weight or change of balance will be an issue with me as I play for fun - not for hours on end (I don't have that much spare time) I've never used a shoulder rest in over 30 years of playing (though I have had a sore collarbone sometimes) it's just my style when I'm scratching on my fiddle.
Current plan A is to make a new pegbox shaped like a coffin with the machine heads poking up and thru it like on a ukulele (this wont adversely change weight much). When I cut off the scroll and fit the resin skull instead - that will change the weight ratio more than I'm probably expecting.
