Ok everyone. As many of you know I was the proud owner of a Franz Hoffman prelude, but when I aquired a second violin, my wife forced me ( literally, she told me she would stop feeding me if I didn't...) to send Hoffman back to Shar. BecauseIi was down to my freebie, el cheapo, violin...I was determined to try to make him sing like a strat. (ok...maybe at least sing like a real Violin.)
I wasn't going to start this thread, but since I am making Ole Roy a work in progress...I figured I would keep everyone up to date. As of right now I have had a Luthier trim and fit a new bridge, (the other one was waaaay to high!!)

and put new strings on him. D'darrio Pro-Arte Medium Tension Strings.

I had him professionally tuned and all that jazz. Afterwards I got a sound sample to Cdennyb for an analysis. I'll get the results back soon.
Pictures to follow soon.

The chart looks promising.
So how do you like how Ole Roy plays and sounds after the trip to the luthier?

Roy sounded 1000x better than before and I can actually play him now. Before the bridge was so high there was about a 1/2 inch clearance between the strings and the fingerboard. I could NOT hit any notes without changing the note itself. I could tune the open strings, but trying to play an E was impossible. Now that the bridge is all set up...it is a whole other world.
I still have some fine tuning to do as well as some upgrades...but all and all, not a bad start.
Next step...new tailpiece and some fine tuners that are not all cheap plastic.

I just got to realizing today... in 8 days, I will have reached my 3 month mark on the violin.
(Also, I am sorry I haven't got my pics posted yet. They should be done tonight.)
Anyways...woohoo on the 3 month anniversary coming up!!

LOLCongratulations. Time flies doesn't it?
Yes it does. But I have at least got Ode to Joy learned pretty well. I need another good tune, but I don know what I want yet. I would love to find some kind of rock tune to learn. You have any Billy Joel sheet music, Pierre?

Don't you need to finish Twinkle Twinkle first?
Ahhhhhhh!!!!! No, keep Twinkle Twinkle away from me!!! My wife said she would leave me and the kids if i started on Twinkle again. It was horrible...so, so horrible! I burned that sheet music for the sake of my marriage!
