This is just awesome Cat. You are very passionate in what you do. I'm lovin' it! Do you have a rough idea when it will be finished. I'm not in a rush or anything as I would rather you take you time and do a good job, just curious.

kkmusicstore never did call me after all about the Cecilio e-violin that I broke for a return. So I'll wait and see and maybe still I can ship that to you to fix and you can just have it for yourself as they replaced mine no charge. Then ship the red fiddle in that case that came with it.devil-violin

I'm not sure about the time line. We're just about done with Boat Season here, so I should be able to work on it more. The actual building will be done by Thanksgiving, I would imagine (barring any unfortunate setbacks,)  and then it's all about the time it takes for the ground and varnish to dry - it's WET here in the Fall and Winter, so it just takes longer to cure fully. I would hate to string it up and mar the finish smile

KK sent you a replacement electric fiddle? Nice! Having a case to ship would be optimal, although I kept the box from a fiddle I bought on eBay to fix up and that worked fine (large box, bubble wrap and lots of packing peanuts.)

thumbs-upI already love it, I sounds great the sound post and the bridge are fine, even after the UPS driver dropped it off the porch!   It's great, and my wife says I always wanted to learn how to play the violin!!!  Well I know just where to get one!!!  LOL  She may have a good Chanukkah!  I think I am going to get a case that costs more than the violin, oh well, it is a great little instrument, Didn't think

I was going to like it this much.  Now I have to find out what size she needs for her short little arms.  Oy.

Que Shalom Shalom what ever will be will be...

Oy....Doesn't that mean Ugh ? BC if you want to get your wife a violin too get a full size I think. It's a small instrument.

Yes, Cat they sent me a replacement and they have not contacted me with return information. Either way, take your time just thought you may want an e-fiddle that you can fix and keep for yourself at no charge. I'll call KK and see what they think tomorrow morning. I have bought many instruments from them and that is how I found this FM site.

You may want to wait off on the case till the 1st of January. I have a little surprise coming up.

CatMcCall,

Have you ever heard of using egg whites and water on a violin?  I don't remember where I read about it but the protein in the egg white is supposed to do something to the wood.

CatMcCall,

Your violin is looking good! I want to make one, too, I have my eyes on one kit, but haven't make up my mind yet since i haven't read enough about violin making. I thought the kit you get, you just need to glue the pieces together, I didn't know you still have to do so much work! Hmmm...

BCShalem,

Congratulations! I'm sure you will like your new violin. I have very short arms and fingers (check out my post on measurement of you arms), I'm using a full size. I struggle but I think eventually i will get it. The more i play the more I thought the length of your arms and fingers really doesn't matter, it's the flexibility that matters, which I lack off :(

Kevin,

I don't know about what the protein in egg white has to do with the wood, but egg white and water and glue is a very strong glue and some use it to repair ceremic. So may be it seals the grain of the wood?

Pky I think you are right.  Now I seem to remember that they used it to seal the wood.

Pky is right. If your wife can play on a full size instrument you will be MUCH more satisfied with the sound. Small instruments give poorer quality sound for the most part. Make sure to check the chart and measure her to see if she doesn't at least fall in the full size category first.

I have not used egg whites (glair*) for the ground...yet...as I've found something that is even easier to use - sugar water** - it really makes the grain "pop," even on not-so-great wood. I had excellent results with the Six Foot Fiddle and will use it again for the Red Fiddle.

** Maestronet is a huge and invaluable resource for anyone interested in building a fiddle. The members are well respected luthiers (but some of them can be jerks, IMHO) who are often willing to answer a simple question with extensive research to back it up. You can get lost in the debates over grounds, varnish, build sequence, the merit of building from unknown molds and on and on.

You can just glue the parts together, pky, but after doing some research and enduring the scorn of the Real Luthiers online about using anything but a Strad pattern and Aged European Tonewood, I decided that I could improve the kit by graduating the plates, using a better ground (everything that goes into the finish will greatly influence the sound) good varnish, better fittings, good strings, etc. and the SFF proves that it's a viable idea.

The kits are of various quality, so you don't know what you're going to get or what might need to be done to improve it. The Red Fiddle has thinner plates with much tighter-grained wood that the SFF, and there has been more finish carving done, which I'm hoping will add up to an even better end product.

You can get just as crazy as you like with improvements blink
