It is a flesch chin rest in rosewood.  A violin chin rest would also work on a viola if you reused the mounting hardware used on the previous viola chin rest (the side ribs are thicker on the viola).  I also used a Wittner Isny shoulder rest, which you may like as well.  The viola version has a slightly thicker pad.  If you like the flesch chin rest, I would get the Isny model for the violin which takes “off brand” chin rest hardware.  There is a separate forum thread on the Isny shoulder rest as well.  A photo follows.A5756EDD-A543-41E8-B89D-9C5C5D3BE964.jpeg

All it would take is one video from Pierre and the giant transpecies violin would be born. I wanted to play since I was 11 but the town's violin teacher said I would outgrow the full size before I was 15 and that killed any chance of my dad putting out that kind of money back in the 70's. I became really good in the sax family but it was like a bad marriage, I liked it but never loved it, but when my instrument collection was destroyed, I was lost. I do mean lost, my identity was destroyed, my best friends gone, I wouldn't wish that on anyone.

Couple months ago I was watching Silenzium videos and here comes the Fiddlerman, I couldn't stop watching. I saw him back in the 80's when he still looked like Mad Max holding a violin. Just like a young Mel Gibson I swear. He's just so full of hope, then after a series of Max Ablitzer videos and my kid dragging me to see the Memphis Symphony Orchestra, ( yeah, another band geek, my heart and soul, and just like me), I have become obsessed with learning the violin. 

I think there a lot of people out there, like Chris, that would learn if they had an instrument that fit their hands. He told me earlier that he was looking at a Cecilio Viola, and I printed off everything you guys said about the upgrade, so who knows.

when i say my hands are big, I wear a size 13.5 on my ring finger until arthritis hits........

I'm not sure what size that is but I presume it very big. Maybe to put things in perspective it would be like me playing on a half size violin or similar???

There seems to be E strings made for the viola. I think they're intended for 5 string variants. I know there's a D'addario Helicore E for viola.

I'm tall and have rather large hands myself. I've toyed with the idea of a viola. I don't struggle so much with the size but I've pondered having the extra stretch.

@Fiddlerman My punkin does still listen to orchestra. I didn't want him to grow up to be like me. I fought a lot and got into a lot of trouble. Throw it down in a heartbeat. You have to when everybody is trying to take what you have. Navy or prison is what the Judge asked, back when the only real requirement was a pulse. I happen to like bell bottoms and look horrible in orange. Like the great pumpkin Charlie Brown. 

So I started taking him to see the Nutcracker and other operatic performances before he got out of diapers, and the Memphis City Orchestra every chance we could. Magicians, Circus, anything not on television so he could see that you are the only person that can hold you back. Change the mind change the world. Anything is possible. You can do anything you set your mind to do, I believe in you and I have faith you.

It's a dangerous world around here.  8-10 people are murdered every week within a 100 mile radius and he lives a lot closer to Memphis than I do. In my lifetime here, I watched at least 40 police officers, 6 Sheriffs, and 5 Judges go to prison. It's a stacked deck.

Yeah I am a big guy but I'm shrinking right on down. From thumb to pinky stretches to just over 10 inches but my palm is only 4 inches wide. There's plenty out there that make me look small. Sad thing is, even crippled, I'm still in better shape than most men half my age and I can barely move some days. That's not saying a lot for me, everything about the health of the nation.

Which is why we need viola's with violin strings. So a fat boy can play along too. I bet you were wondering how I would bring that trip full circle. The days of the skinny rooster running the roost is coming close to an end. At least with the fatboy violin, people would be forced to stand in order to hit that E string, get tired of the bow hanging up on a jelly roll, get up. If I don't slim on down I'll be getting a viola-lin with a reinforced backside to hold up my fat head.

I know what you mean. The idea came from a friend of mine that can't get his hand between the scroll and the body of a violin. I think he ordered a cecillio viola but he works on a riverboat and I haven't seen him for awhile.

I get this violin figured out, I may end up with a giant violin just to mess with people.

Instant gratification is a mental illness. I want a cheeseburger now, go to McD's and have their instant meat to fill my instant need. Lay around playing video games of a guy running through a jungle instead of just running through the jungle.

Kids will watch videos of other kids playing instead of going out and playing. Not the world I grew up in.

I saw an interesting TV programme about that the other day.

In the USA there is basically a not-entirely-rational fear of sugar, and in the UK a similar fear of fat. When I had my heart-attack, the advice was to cut down on fat. I cut down too much and binged on carbs and put on a lot of weight. I have a friend who is a cardiac nurse who says the fat phobia is nonsense.

Anyway, the TV programme was about two doctors who are identical twin brothers, and one went on a high fat diet with no carbs and the other went on a high carb diet with no fat (by carb I mean anything from glucose to cellulose). Turned out both diets were self-limiting. Both doctors lost weight. The high fat diet had a worse time of it though, as they both lost fat and muscle, but the high fat guy lost more muscle. Also his brain activity was poor, as the brain requires sugar. Also, believe it or not, the high fat guy was the closest to getting diabetes - his pancreas was forgetting how to produce insulin. Sugar in our diet gives the pancreas exercise and keeps it in shape. 

The real problem is food that has identical amounts of fat and sugar, like cheesecake and donuts and diary ice-cream and other "grazing" foods - this one type of food overrides the thing in the brain that tells you you are full, so people just eat them all day long. I also suppose that the sugars in the potato in chips are balanced by the fat in them. I can also wonder if cheese and biscuits (crackers) are similar. But another part of the problem is of course the HFCS (High Fructose Corn Syrup), which is killing people's livers, but I suspect you've seen enough about that on American TV not to need me to tell you about it. McDonalds buns are full of HFCS, of course.

Very slight thread drift there, but I think I got away with it!

@Gordon Shumway Absolutely. I preached the same things for decades while making correct yet unacceptable statements. After seeing the "truth" steted and recanted so many times over the decades, it was obvious that doctors and scientists had barely scratched the surface and were putting out false information under pressure. People want to feel informed as opposed to being left in the dark even if the information given is incorrect.

The body has to have sugar, it has to have fat, but not in excess. I remember when eggs were the best thing in the world, then condemned, and I think they are making a move back to the best now. At 13 grams of protein per large egg, a perfect mix of cholesterol (another scientific evil but necessary for a healthy body) it should be in the category of super foods with cabbage. We have been misled by the experts for so long we don't trust ourselves anymore.

You know when you sit down to eat the first several bites are so delicious, then you don't notice the flavor as being so fantastic any longer. that is the body's way of telling you it is time to stop eating. If you eat until you feel full, you have already eaten to much.

The high fat diets are a bit of a joke. Muscle ways more than fat in a smaller volume. The old body building ideology was, fat turns to fat. The body is designed to survive at any cost. Fat has no nutritional value and when a person eats a high fat diet, the body catobolizes muscle tissue while storing the fat in order to keep you alive and warm. We are designed as animals in nature no matter what our opinions of ourselves may be.

 

I do hate to hear of your heart attack and I am so glad you made it through brother.

I've read a lot of those studies too Andrew. Also sorry to hear about your heart attack.
Presently I'm doing intermittent fasting and feeling really good about it. Starting to see some stomach muscles if I look really closely. ;)

You know how you feel really hungry and weak around the third day and most of us quit on the third day? Keep going, everything changes after the third day. Not as hungry, body gets into burning some energy up, you may have some hallucinations start kicking in around the 7th day, that's okay, it passes, just stay hydrated and that will keep the headaches at bay. After the first week you will start to see sounds. 

It was a religious trip for me, never tried it just to drop weight but the longer I went the more weight I would drop, just have to be positive, and seriously, after the third day passes, the hunger goes away.

I like doing food grade hydrogen peroxide cycles ever so often. Cancer is an issue in my family and the peroxide treatment has the testimony of many people. It also acts as a cleanse. Around the 7th day you feel kinda sickish but you cycle up and down for about 30 days. 15 up and 15 down. Some people go longer but 30 is plenty for me.

The faster you quit things with a high glycaemic index, the faster the acclimatisation happens - I went from living on sugar to living on pork and sweet potato (you call them yams in the USA, I think) and equivalent foods, and stopped feeling any hunger after two days. Lost 28 LB in no time. I want to lose another 14, but that is a toughie. (multiples of 14LB because in the UK we have a unit of weight called the stone=14LB.)

I've always had a superb six-pack. It just lies hidden under my pork belly. Lol, but true.

Sometime in my 30's my digestive system went through a series of changes where it started rejecting milk, pork, beef, tomatoes, etc. If it wasn't for my love of chicken I don't know what would have happened. I still eat those foods on occasion but I pay for it.

Just for future reference and a reminder to the kids, Don't brag about your six pack to a man that carries a keg.

My friend has a keg and apparently he sits the mugs on top of it. Why isn't there a sports bra for men?

I've noticed changes to my digestion over the last 5 or 10 years too - I have become intolerant of garlic and most pulses. Petits pois are fine, but lentils or marrowfat peas are agony. I haven't tried giving up gluten, although I have quit bread, but I might just do it out of curiosity. Wholemeal pasta is inedible, but spelt pasta is not bad if you cook it with enough salt.

No, I'm a bit puzzled by your question. But maybe it's because I've always gone for strong flavours. It used to take me at least 90 minutes to make tomato sauce - an hour to sweat down a large quantity of onions, then go to work with bacon, wine, garlic, cloves, bayleaves, tomato pulp, salt, pepper, sugar and finally a big handful of dried basil.

I decided that was too much effort and tried to cut down the time factor. Now I get the same result without wine or garlic, but the main trick is to reduce all that tomato pulp until it's really thick. I don't think I ever did reduce the time factor, though. I haven't cooked that for a while and can't remember.

The way I do a sweet potato/yam is by microwaving it whole and unskinned. Then I hold it in a cloth and open it and spoon out the flesh and mash it with sweet chilli sauce or butter and salt and pepper.
