  • If you like, please begin by telling us anything you would like to about yourself. Age, place of birth, residence, etc.

Age: Prefer not to tell (I’m a woman :P )

Family: a husband and a 5.75 year-old daughter who just started kindergarten in late August and started to take violin lessons at the beginning of July, 2011.

Place of birth: Malaysia

Residence: USA

  • What made you decide to play the violin?

When my daughter started to take violin lessons, which was about three months ago, I thought it might be a good idea to learn along with her so I could help her practice. In addition, I’ve always wanted to be able to play ONE musical instrument well, but without teachers and without instruments, I can’t reach the level I wish to reach. To be honest, at the beginning, I thought a good violin would cost less than a grand piano, now I learned from this website that an expensive violin could cost a fortune. If I’d known then what I’d known now I would have sent her to take piano lessons. Anyway, I bought my daughter and myself each a cheap violin (to many people it is nothing for a violin,…

Wonderful interview. Everyone is so interesting. I wish we could all hang out in person! Pky, I think it's wonderful you initially chose to play violin to help your daughter with her lessons. Parental involvement is so important!

Thank you Pky ... we've all been following your progress for a while, and I have always been impressed by your enthusiasm.  Your daughter will have no choice but to enjoy it too, because her mum is so talented and enthusiastic.

Well done on the interview.

If you think you can, or you think you can't, you're probably right.

Thanks for all your support.

Here's the update of my goals:

short term: the same, work on Christmas project.

Long term: Finish the suzuki book one with my daughter, finish Duncan Craig's first lessons: violin in six months (by the end of March or April 2012).

Make a violin (1/2 for my daughter or 4/4 for myself) from a kit in addition to cigarbox violin. I'm still browsing for tools (e.g., clamps, glue, etc) and a kit. I better get OCD LOL (i already am on searching for a kit).

BTW, we went to a lemon festival yesterday, a guy was using a violin bow (or viola bow) to saw on a real metal saw to make music. I couldn't recognize the tune, its sounds is tiny (but it was in an open park), more like on A string, but nice and creative. He used his right leg to do the vibrato:P

I may try to saw on a saw as well LOL and see if i could get a tune or two, my daughter wants to try, too.
