So, I have been working on the Group Project. I have made progress, even on the second page with the E and A strings. I do feel better about them, but it is still not acceptable, for me.

I also have issues with bowing for 3 or more beats, especially following right up with a note, and then that note being drawn out for 3 or more beats. This, is not improving, at all. Please, do not post videos showing how to biw. It messes me up, and I no longer watch them. I will find something in Fiddlerman's tutorials. I need just one way to do, not a ton. His videos are clear, thought out and very well done. I mean that. Thank you Fiddlerman. I will get there. If time has run kut before I will be too busy to sit and do the video, I will just fudge those long bows, I think there are 4 measures where I have that problem. The rest, is just a matter of getting it down better.

For some reason, I cannot memorize this GP piece. Funny, I seem to be able to get it better, maybe not memorizing and a just relying on the sheet music works better for me. Keeps me from doing whatever I darn well feel like doing! 😂😂😂😂

So, Sunday I turn %#$$&. Yep. I asked my husband if he was going to bake me a cake or buy me one at the supermarket. The supermarket would be chocolate with the whipped frosting option, not the buttercream. The whipped is airy and not so sweet. I suspect he will buy it. That supermarket makes the absolutely best chocolate cake with whipped frosting. Everyone loves it. Hmmm. Wonder if he will do it. I did scale down my idea for this birthday from a trip to Las Vegas to this cake. 😁

@Mouse  First off, Happy Birthday and I hope you receive the cake of your dreams! 😊

I apologize for not posting sooner (but I’ve been dodging stormy weather, both literally and lifewise).   I saw a while ago that you did a shout out for tips concerning the A and E strings, and I intended to throw in my 2 cents…

Do you ever practice the violin while standing up?  If not, you may find this really helpful, particularly when playing the E string and when drawing longbows.  (I know the standing can get tiresome as more of these birthdays roll around, but standing during at least part of your session can really help with form and technique.) In all my years of lessons, I never once had a lesson sitting down, and I naturally did all my practice sessions standing. The only time we ever sat down while playing was in long ensemble performances.  Now, I sit for about half of my playing time, but I always feel more fluidity while standing.  I hope that’s helpful.

Congratulations on being literate!  Reading and using sheet music is an essential and valuable skill that you should embrace and take pride in!  The random internet chatter of the day implies that all pieces must be memorized and some folks even enjoy dismissing sheet music as “the dots.”  I just view that as envy from folks who haven’t made the effort to learn to read music well.

I love using sheet music when playing with the click track.  It makes staying in sync intuitive and effortless.  Of course your fingers will have internalized the piece by the time you’ve truly learned it, but the sheet music still frees you up to relax and focus on tone and dynamics while remembering to hit record, count ten seconds, start the click track, smile, play well, count ten seconds and then stop.  The only music I actually fully  memorize are the short fiddle tunes or songs that I play at jams or in festival campgrounds.

The recordings you post always sound great.  I’m sure you’ll contribute something that sounds great for this project as well.

Cheers,

Unfretted.

Hey, @Unfretted! Welcome to my Cubby Hole!

Thank you for your comments. I sit down. I have never stood while playing, When I had lessons, it was always sitting down. I did try standing one time when I was not getting lessons, did not go well. I will give it another try. It just might help. It does make sense, based on the  arm position and the body position when bowing those two strings, and mostly the E string.

Reading music is about as far as school music teachings went. Complicated music, not so much, too many symbols and stuff that I am not familiar with, but I don't do complicated. This is supposed to be fun. I could categorize my reading music as "adequate" too, and that is a good place because I do not perform, this is just for me, myself and I.

My adequate playing could, quite possibly, improve beyond adequate, my music reading, will probably remain as a adequately literate, which is a good place.

Thanks for visiting the Cubby Hole! Next time, please bring some chocolate cake with whipped frosting topping. I only ned one piece, not an entire cake. Mice do not really like cheese. This Mouse does, though, but only a little bit. 😂

OH, WOW, @Unfretted! My birthday is not Sunday! 😂😂😂😂😂

My birthday is Monday, not Sunday!bunny-headbangI have one more day before I turn that dreaded, %#$$&.

That gives my husband another day to order the cake. The supermarket's website is not working right now! I just might get that cake!cool_gif I haven't had a piece of that cake in a few years. I hope they did not change it up. It has been the same since that supermarket opened up there. I think if the cake does not materialize, Las Vegas will be back on.

Well, @Mouse, sounds like you just got one more day of youth.  Enjoy it!

But wait… forgetting your own birthday?  Did you just have your first senior moment? 😂😂😂

Sounds like you’re in a really good place.  You enjoy playing music and you make the best of it.  What more can any of us wish for?

If @Fiddlerman  would just upgrade this forum software to the version that allows for digital transmission of food items, I’d gladly send you a slice of my (yes, award winning) chocolate cake.

Enjoy your bonus day and your birthday!

😊,

Unfretted

Oh, @Unfretted, not my first senior moment. They are basically, Mouse moments! This has happened for many many years. I just do not pay attention to dates, most of the time. Since we retired the days really do not mean anything. We don't get up for work 5 days a week. LOL. But, the weeks do seem to go by quicker and quicker. Really? Who sped up the clock?

We went to vote yesterday morning and went to the grocery store while we were out. We were half way there, so we doubled up tasks. Got groceries and ordered a cake. Yep, chocolate, and they still have the whipped frosting option! Jer will pick it up Monday morning. That is all I want.

It was a good time to go to the grocery store. They had some really nice strawberries, buy one, get one free! And they still had the delicious small Florida naval oranges on sale. I bought some the last time we shopped, and they were so juicy and sweet, and just the right size. Good day to shop.

So, I am all set. 😁 Happy as a Lark. Are Larks really happy? How would you know? Why do they say, "Happy as a Lark"? One of the world's many mysteries.

Thank you, @Fiddlerman. I had a great easy day. I am glad I decided not to take a trip. Staying home was very relaxing. Besides, I was home when my granddaughters facetimed. It is better using an iPad than iPhone, which it would have been, had we headed out somewhere. I was also home when my older daughter and daughter-in-law  called, Who knows how reception would have been had we gone somewhere.

Cake was good. Haven't had cake in a while.

I did not get to do my violin. Between phone calls would have been a little hard. Given my granddaughters live 3 hours difference away, by the time they were home from school, had dinner, settled down, I would have already done it. But, earlier, I would have been stopping and starting. I need good playing time sessions or it messes me up.

It was a beautiful day, so I did go out to read and watch Jer "fiddle" with his tractor, 😂😂😂. He does pretty well with the fiddlin'.

Later today, I will be doing the group project. I need to find a place with a good background to record it. Might have to be un front of the plant again. Too many windows to try to dodge elsewhere,  it a small house. I would like to record sessions,  now. Who knows, I might get a lucky recording, or, hopefully, when I try for a good one, it won't freak me out, In theory ....

I added the click tracks to my playing of the GP this morning. It is actually easier to do the long notes, more than 2 beat counts. I have problems with those. They are much easier to do when using the click tracks! I really felt pretty good when I was done.

I then did some site reading, even some I figured would be relly hard. And they were, but, hey, it was fun.

Dang! I have hit the same roadblock I always hit. I was filled with confidence about the GP. I was going to try to start videoing next week.

All out the window. I have lost all confidence. I have already begun to panic about a video I will be seen in (again, in my mind it is an audience).

I was doing so well. 🥴🤯😔

Weeeellll, I did two videos of the GP, just practice videos. Better than expected, but that is not saying much. I did better before recording. Bummer. I will try again tomorrow.

Half way through the week. I still am not able to record the project, but getting closer.🤞

I did knit a pair of bulky yarn house socks during my non-playing time. Finished them last night. I like the pattern, not the yarn choice. Too slippery and mushy. I have another yarn to try. Also, have the front, back and one sleeve made for a sweater. Works up quickly on my knitting machine. I will do the other sleeve today, AFTER DOING MY VIOLIN. Violin is priority right now.

I do love the Tzigane string on my Fiddlershop Lord Wilton. Good match.

Just finished playing my violin. The GP is coming along. I am beginning to have it memorized. I look at the sheet music, but it helps to have it memorized. I was not able to have any of it memorized before. That usually does not happen until a piece starts to sink in and becomes almost second nature, so I guess this means progress. Maybe, I can try to video tomorrow, before I lose it, which also happens after a while, 😂.

So, it seems that thw older I get, the more I am having trouble with videoing. Might explain why I was able to post a few earlier.

Anyway, I really think I am ready to do some serious video of the GP attempts, and will, hopefully, get a usable one. Here is the problem. I cannot get myself to do it, I have been trying for the last two days, and I always have some sort of block. I will do this.

Got my Group Project submitted. 11 takes! But it was submitted.

It stresses me out, but in a good way. It was violin 1 this year, not cello. That was different.

I learned a lot. Mostly learned what I need to work on. We will see how that goes.
