I have decided to start my own blog to try and help me stay to track while practicing and hopefully improving the Sevcik opus 1 book. 1.It was my New Years resolutions to keep at it and although I practice it everyday I’m struggling big time. In the above vid I’m just trying to get a straight bow ! I think as I hopefully progress I’ll add some clips and any advice is hugely appreciated!

Thank you Sharon it’s nice going back to basics it feels like the right thing to be doing . I did notice a weird thing this eve during my practice. Not sure what was happening but it felt like my index finger on the stick was moving or the stick was moving in order for me to stay straight. It was really annoying me I was thinking this can’t be right. Anyway I came across this vid which explained it …

That's a wonderful video about the movement of the index finger and the purpose of the silver wrap on the bow - makes so much sense! (LOVE ALL Prof William Fitzpatrick's videos!)
I'm always keeping my eye out for tips to reinforce straight bowing and I just found this video with some really great tips to try, by Susanna Klein!
I shared this particular video with RDP - at about 1:50 minutes in, shows what each finger does on the bow - how they help you steer the bow:
Advanced Violin Bow Hold - Red Dessert Violin
Really glad you started this blog - bowing/bow hold are so important! 🤗
It's SO important that people have developed all sorts of gadgets & gimmics to help.
Orchestra Classroom: The Idea That's Rocking My World!
...LOVE this one. 🤣

Thanks Emily I watched the vids. I think in one of the Red Dessert ones you recommended Lora staples mentioned a slide at the tip and to stop that you need to stick your wrist out so that’s what I’m struggling with above. I remember I think it was one of my early posts I was asking why do you stick you wrist out !!! So now I know .

I'm sure you can practice 3 notes slurred (just as fast as you can say 1, 2, 3)! Just the same 3 up, then same 3 down - repeat.
How about starting on the new Group Project SharonC put together for us?

Definitely! The street I used to live on was called Ash Grove. I don’t know the song so I’ll have to do some research ! Yes I will have a good go bit worried about not staying straight but now I’m aware i should be ok ! I really want to get good at Sevcik so I can use it to warm up. Not a log of practice today about 3 15 minute sessions could have been worse though!
Ode to Joy practice .. trying to get a straight bow while concentration on getting the notes in tune and the fourth finger ! I think I need to work on not bowing from my shoulder! I know what I have to do but it’s doing it that’s hard. Im trying to memorise the tune as well so I can concentrate on my bow. Loving the practice tho!! Well sort of it’s up and down 😬 oh yes slurs are all in the wrong places !
I’m on holiday at the moment I couldn’t practice yesterday as we were in a Travel Lodge but we are in our cottage now …although I left my shoulder rest in the car which is in a multi story and that’s a bit of a treck away! Anyway got everything I need now and I practiced a bit tonight. I started with my mute on and I was shocked how it did completely mute it in a really horrible way. it took me ages to get rid of my mute and I can see why my forum friends were on about getting rid ! But anyway I thought it went ok and I seem to be getting my fingers down to vibrate a bit better a bit more continuous. Ummm also getting on better with my mpv not pressing so hard !! Maybe being in a different place has made me notice stuff … that’s how it feels!
