GREAT START! 🤗
While skimming over a viola masterclass tonight, one of the instructors reminded the person playing (and me 😁) that there are 3 parts to each note played (beginning, middle & ending), and each is bowed differently (speed and pressure).
...I was just thinking this might be the perfect piece to really explore that.

Mini breakthrough tonight whilst practicing ( which i wasn’t going to do). Started playing the schradieck exercise number one and found I could reach my fourth finger much easier! Bit of a miracle as I haven’t exactly been thinking about my fourth finger. Just felt a lot easier. I have been doing some finger articulation exercises without the bow so maybe that’s helped it. But I haven’t exactly been doing those exercises for long so not sure.. anyway I’m not complaining I’m happy !!

@Katie L Practice over time works. Seems like a simple thing to say, but it does. It's the "over time" part that gets us. Like watching a kettle, waiting for it to boil--once we're not paying attention to it, it just seems to happen like magic.
Your increased fourth finger capability is probably a culmination of your recent finger articulation exercises as well as all the work you done before (i.e., both short & long term efforts).
I remember the first time I was able to shift into 3rd position without figuring it out ahead of time (i.e., the first time looking at & playing a particular music passage).
I just stopped playing and said "Oh my God--that just happened! I didn't even think about it." It was like the clouds parted in the sky & angels were singing

That’s amazing Sharon! I get what you are saying. It’s like my practice is paying off ! I was in a slight slump , madam butterfly is a hard slog but I’m feeling pretty good now! It’s is a bit of a stop what you are doing and think what’s just happened moment - like your shifting into third position !
Thanks for watching madam butterfly as well 😁

It is. It is very hard for us to realise that our practice pays off, as when we hear ourselves from day to day we don't notice the slow changes in the way we play, but outsiders (& teachers) who hear us once a month notice. It's important not to get dejected.

I’ve been messing around with my shoulder rest today. I’ve swapped my Bon Musica for my Kun just because I was getting a bit of neck ache ! I think because the Bon Musica hooks over the shoulder maybe it’s locking it in place causing neck tension. Also I find the Bon Musica a bit clumpy and heavy .. well anyway I’m going to experiment . I expect I’ll swap back but I’m going to give it a bit of time !
