Thanks stringy 😀 I’m back working in the office now so I won’t get the chance to practice before work or at lunch. So it will just be in the evenings and weekends. So I’m a bit gutted about that.
Back to Sevcik for the last few practice sessions. I can see how doing the exercises will help it’s just doing them and all the other exercises I need to do !! Hopefully my practice won’t grind to a halt ! I’ll definitely be doing some every day !!

Ah thanks Mark!
I managed about 20 minutes practice today.. working on 4th finger and my left hand form. Trying to keep my fingers close to the strings. I always have in mind I’ll practice the Sevcik first few bars but end up gravitating towards schradieck! So I think I’ll just concentrate on that for now.
Hoping to get some more practice in at the weekend. Also having a new radiator in that room so it will hopefully be warmer !

Nice!
Are you counting in your head, or out loud while doing vibrato?
I'm still working on changing speed & making it even. I have so many pokers in the fire, I've really only been playing 2 speeds when I practice. So I count '1, 2, 3, 4' is 8 (2 vibratos per count) - then twice as fast.
Have you found a new tune to put some of your exercises to work?

Maybe you could look at this again: -

My advice is to hold your violin like a guitar, pluck a string - G may work best - and vibrato fast, like guitar vibrato, until you can get it to sound good.
Failing that, rest the scroll of your violin against a wall for support and safety and vibrato with your middle finger on E on the A string and vibrato fast.
I'm not convinced of the value of slow vibrato practice.

Thanks Emily and Gordon. I used to count but I don’t really practice vibrato much now. I only really posted that because I thought for a seconds i speeded up slightly. It seems to have gone a bit erratic now. I’ll try guitar position as well. I do need to keep practicing if I want to get it though but it’s definitely not my priority. But I think when I was counting it sounds like what you do. How are you getting on with it ? Are you practicing every day ?
I only managed to practice for about twenty minutes today but I was working on my fourth finger and trying to bring my palm closer to the neck so it’s parallel. but I think the 20 mins was worthwhile.

Managed another twenty minutes tonight . Next week should be better as working from home three days so I can practice before work and at lunch ! Also this weekend we are doing DIY but definitely get lots of practice in ! I might even try and record my schradieck exercises which I think are going ok. The more I do them the easier my fourth finger is. !

I try hard to exaggerate dynamics, but even when I think I've played that, most of the time I'll listen to my recordings & realize it wasn't enough of an exaggeration to get my feeling across.
The more you try to memorize, the easier it will get - are you trying to memorize the melody you hear, or the notes? ...important events in a story are easier to remember than the exact wording - even when memorizing a speech, people usually focus on key points - not exact wording. Think 'parts' & 'repeats'.
My only secret to memorizing pieces is listening to someone play it MANY times.
Keep up the great work!

I’ve been working on dynamics this morning. Can you hear any difference in the notes? I sort of could when I was playing it but it’s not as distinct when I listened back.
It's difficult to tell. My suspicion from the sound and partly from the slow? bow speed (over the fingerboard?) is that you are applying no index finger pressure to the silver winding. Bow midway between bridge and fingerboard and go as heavy as you can on that index finger for every bow speed from slow to fast until it sounds too heavy, then ease back a little.

great video Katie.. actually liked all of it and subscribed to his channel so thanks for the share
The singing suggestion seems to be a common thing across different instrument and genre so must be something to it. my problem is ..i have trouble doing THAT with emotion so no wonder i feel like I struggle with dynamics. It helps though...if nothing else, it for sure helps memorize tunes.
