Same here Abitrusty. I mean I find myself humming and I can definitely go louder and softer.

But I like the story idea and Emily’s thinking or parts and repeats. I think for me Rome and Juliet is a good one to work on as it’s obviously an emotional story and I can refer back to Fiddlerman’s video. I think if I can think of parts of the story when I’m playing certain sections that might help. Also I’m beginning to be able to play that from memory which is good.

I am not qualified or good enough to gIve any advice on phrasing or anything Like that, but I think your intonation is really good.

Dont underestimate being completely relaxed, and also  not trying too hard.

@Katie L -

I listen enough so I can anticipate the rhythm & what notes or passage will come next.

Then, depending on the genre - I might ask myself some of these questions to help me get started dynamics & phrasing.  Sometimes making a physical list helps.

  • what overall feeling do I want to express?
  • what is the rhythm & how can I emphasize it?
  • what notes/beats need to stand out?
  • do I need to play delicately/softly, lightly, quickly & where at?
  • do I need to play lush/full, smooth or loud?
  • how do I want to begin/end the bow strokes, what can I do in the middle?
  • what sharps or flats do I need to make sure I get right?

Then I look at what I can do with my hands:

  • left hand - slide or ease into a note, vibrato, double stops, harmonics, left hand pizzicato?  Where at?
  • right hand/fingers/arm - relax more, attack, pizzicato, apply pressure, lift, increase/decrease bow speed, steer to a specific bowing 'lane' (near bridge or fingerboard)?  Where at?
  • what bow strokes & bowing patterns do I know?  Where best to use them?

I start by trying 1 or 2 things out.

Everyone has their own methods... I found I usually need to make mental lists to help me sort out which techniques I want to use whenever I create anything.  Even something spontaneous turns out best if there are a few limitations/boundaries - so I set those limits.

ALL the Fiddlerman tutorials are GREAT - especially the ones on Dynamics & Phrasing!

Ah thanks Stringy ! And Emily for the suggestions.

Earlier on I watched the Romeo and Juliet ( I’m sure I have posted it on here before) and played sections of it on my violin . So she played a bit, I paused it and then I played the same bit. Just trying to get in the zone of playing with some expression. I feel like my playing is just a few out of tune notes strung together. Maybe the odd note in tune for a bit. But k think I have improved and now I can get to the tip, using more bow, I think.

I think a Romeo and Juliet party is called for I’d love to see other versions!

I’ve seen this before, thanks for reminding me Emily.

I have been watching this Inspector Morse video I was thinking I once I’ve been playing it a while I might be able to play along with the purple line …

I’ve been practicing Inspector Morse which I’m really enjoy ( using the music above) but what’s bugging me is there are no slurs just a few ties until later on. Can I put my own slurs in or keep to the music ? When I put my own slurs in I end up playing it differently every time. Sometimes running out of bow. But it does sound smoother than without. Or should I go with no slurs which would be really good string crossing practice ! There is one part where it’s a g third finger on the d string then straight to a high g second finger on the e !!!!

You can play it however you like its interpretation. I have heard thousands of pieces of music all played slightly differently, even heard thunderstruck played by a  norwegian hillbilly band on banjos, as long as you can tell what it is, it doesnt matter.

@Katie L -

You might want to look at who the arranger is (guitarist?) & take the notation with a grain of salt (not saying there's anything wrong).

I agree with Stringy & think you are so familiar with hearing this tune you'll discover your own way how to play it so it's recognizable.  I usually revisit a tune later & decide to play it differently.

Even if I slur, I try to make sure each note is heard clearly... just doesn't mean I always manage it. (lol)

Thanks both. I quite like the way I’m putting the slurs on myself , maybe I’m actually learning something. I think this is the most musical I’ve sounded playing a piece so I’m going to carry on with what I’m doing ! 👍

You are getting a nice sound from your violin, Katie L.

@Katie L -

I'm very impressed on how you are working on this piece.

It would be a difficult piece for me to memorize, because of the irregular morse code rhythm at the beginning, which doesn't start to smooth out until the 14th measure - crazy!

My hat goes off to you!

@Katie L You’re doing a great job on it!  I agree with everyone--I would add slurs to it.  I commonly write in my slurs, fingerings (and then erase & change them).

I took the first 3 screens of the linked video you’ve got above, and wrote out how I think I’d do it, as an example for you.  Not the definitive way; I’m sure you and others might do it differently, just wanted to give you an example.

Measure 14 (section B) where the low to high g is—I would change my bow direction between them.  I had two ways I might play measures 14-15; attached image of both (3 & 3A).  Typically, I would practice both, then go with the one I could do the most smoothly.

Thanks Mark Emily and Sharon and Mouse!!

Emily I honestly don’t know what I’m doing with this I’m just playing the notes as in tune as possible and just doing my best with the note values. I find it really hard to quantify note lengths and tend to really over think them but then at the same time I think I need to think about them more and I’m basically missing out a huge chunk of musical knowledge I should know by now. I’m doing my best though and that fact that you have said said what you have said has really encouraged me!!

Sharon that’s amazing thanks for putting the slurs in for me .. so kind . I will print them and see which one I like. That low to high g I was thinking how will i play that but good idea separate bows.

That video was a few weeks ago and I’ve been playing Vincent and Morning has Broken just because I wanted to play something simpler. !

Thanks a lot 😁

Yesterday was an intensive vibrato practice (I know that’s not how you are supposed to practice vibrato but what the heck ) and I had another go. Just realised I need to make the motion smaller.

Yes agreed . I’m on it. This is weird but I’m finding sliding my fingers about in the strings is helping loosen the knuckles. Like doing a slide and then a chunk of vibrato .. obviously I have no idea  what I’m doing 🤣
