Definitely Abitrusty I love hearing how others are doing with their vibrato. This should be re named ‘The bellyaching vibrato blog ! ‘

I agree with you completely when you say about discovering something that makes it click . I have been watching videos and reading threads on vibrato and thinking there must be something I’m doing wrong , and reading one sentence could make it click into place. I have found in the past few days that because I’ve read about so many different techniques and approaches that the actual movement of vibrato has gone out the window. For instance I read how thinking of vibrato as a circular motion could speed it up and I do understand the concept , but practicing a circle motion has made me forget which direction to vibrate, hence the weird drawing . But then reading about the motion in about Galamian’s violin book, just one sentence put me back on track ! I have however decided to go back to basics with it to make sure I’m getting the motion right. Also I read about what actually happens to the string when you vibrate … think I’m wrong in that area too. It’s a total mine field especially when you don’t have a teacher !

I’ll keep belly aching along with you but will definitely keep you updated .

I thoroughly enjoy your posts. You should have heard my frustration on a knitting machine forum. I was having such a hard time finding the stitch that belonged on a needle!

So tonight ….. definitely still working on the motion but I did have one good thing happen … I was suprised at how flexible my fist finger knuckle is . And I ended up practicing all of my fingers in turn except fourth finger that will get its special treatment on its own . 😁 so even though I’ve taken a massive step back   Kind of feeling like it’s the right thing to be doing so I’m happy !!

I am finding that the best way for me to practice vibrato is to have the first three fingers all down at once … Is this ok ? I just watched Fiddlerman’s vid and he has three fingers down but I think that’s just to demonstrate.. here is a vid if you can bare to watch 😬 also this is a very different motion to what I have been doing previously, but I’m following Galamian’s instructions! Putting three fingers down together is good because it feels like the first and third fingers are showing the second one what to do !!!

Also I know I’m out of tune but not concentration on that and another thing , I could hear next door putting stuff in their van so was sort of thinking about that and how maybe they can hear me eeeeeek !!!

Your movement looks correct to me, using other fingers to help support a weak finger is perfectly acceptable.

So here is my first ever duet with my mum on the piano. Obviously needs a lot of work and I take my eyes off the music so I kinda lose where be both are but … something go work on. This is only after a couple of run throughs. We have both been working on Amazing Grace separately and only did  a couple of run throughs..

Ahh thanks Emily Abitrusty, Stringy, Mouse…

really really glad you liked it. I only see her every so often so we have been working on our own and then put it together. I think I’ll get her to record the piano part and then I can practice with it. It was fun. Also good seeing my whole self.

thanks again 😁

@Katie L  Yay!  Great duet with your mum--sounds wonderful!  You'll be ready to doing gigs together before you know it smile

Thanks Sharon 😁… however for the record , we did it again this morn and it was a million times better. I wasn’t holding a couple of notes for long enough , her music was tiny on the I pad and there were a few other issues. We will keep practicing apart but it was good fun.

did a couple of practice sessions today . This eve mostly vibrato and working on staying relaxed . Also watched a documentary on Vivaldi on sky if anyone can get it , well worth a watch. Musical masterpieces. The violinists are amazing .
