You mention  pushing the wrist out, don't try to push the wrist out, try to let your hand drop slightly forward, it's a different thing. , you push the hand away but let it drop, very difficult to explain.

If you let your hand drop naturally slightly forward it gives you an automatic start with vibrato, also I think vibrato works best at the end of a passage, on the longer notes, but this is my own opinion and not worth anything really.

You are nearly there anyway, with tone, bow control and everything else.

Thanks Stringy. I’m trying not to overthink like you say but there is a lot to it. Think it’s going ok !

I watched this video on you tube today …

it was good !! I watched it twice ! Not sure how others would feel as I know there are differing options on vibrato ! However I thought I’d share . Feeling ok about my vibrato practice at the moment !

Yes it’s really really long but I found it quite engaging and informative.. I liked the lady and the fella as well. I thought they explained it  all well. Focus is on wide vibrato and listening to the lower pitch .. something I do not do !!!

I have been practicing Gymnopedie this weekend and vibrato ..getting a bit more regular with my vibrato practice. So instead of remembering a vibrato exercise and doing it here and there, I’m doing the same exercises every time I practice ! Think it’s going ok ! Oh and listening to it as well. Also practicing Gymnopedie without the slurs and noticing a better 4th finger , I think ! 👍

Lots of practice ..love playing winter ! Not sure why I didn’t put the slurs in but here is a clip . I put vibrato at the end which was unexpected.. if you can call it vibrato of course 🫢

yesterday did lots of practice and it went ok, today was a bit rubbish and I think I only did about 20 mins. Vibrato is definitely a very up and down journey for me ! I’m finding keeping in mind polishing the string but also knocking on the door and thinking of it as one motion. I think I these ideas are helping me. Believe it or not I am enjoying it tho.

Great stuff Katie don't often read all these blogs, but do get round to them eventually, I have been very busy with building work.

Think your vibrato is really coming on, no doubt about it, still think you are trying to hard though, you more or less have it, qnd that's the truth. said it before but the best way is to drop it into tunes without thinking, hard concept, but you get a feeling were it should go and dont think about it, and that's when it starts to really come on, you have to stop trying so hard.

I am seriously impressed with how your coming along.

If you want my advice, for what its worth, practice scales constantly and never accept a bad note, ever, when you hit the right note, lift your finger, drop it,  and play it again 3 times, it fixes it into your memory. Intonation is king, very difficult but there you go.

Thanks Stringy that’s really nice although I’m feeling a bit rubbish about it !!

Feel like I’m practicing a lot and not seeing much improvement especially with vibrato.. ! It feels really tense and I know I’m pressing too hard. I’ve got one of those fat highlighters and sit there practicing the motion but then when it comes to doing it on the violin I just tense up!!

Anyway I’ll carry on !

I have confidence you will get to where vibrato feels like part of the playing process & not so much an isolated 'thing' to deal with. 😉

Thanks for the advice Emily , I do agree there are other things to concentrate on but vibrato has got under my skin and the tiny little triumphs are making me carry on with it everyday. One good thing that is happening is I’m managing to practice it in first position now ! I could only practice in third so that is progress. And I’m really aware of how hard I’m pressing as well.. maybe that pink highlighter pen is helping 😂 also first finger is sounding better that maybe my best finger !! I expect I’ll be posting a completely different update in a few days ha ha..

I have got some news ….

There is a music school about a 15 minute walk from my house . It always looked a bit derelict to me and I literally drive past it all the time ! So when I started to play the violin I googled it but couldn’t see any mention of the violin ! Anyway I tried with a teacher a while ago but she didn’t help me at all, didn’t even look at what I was doing ! So it made me want to just carry on as I was ! So now I’m thinking I need to try again to find a teacher . So I had another look at the music place up the road and maybe I missed it the first time but they mentioned the violin and it even said adult beginners! So I’ve e mailed them  and they came back to say they have a waiting list but am I free for any cancellations that may come up !? And guess what, I’m having a lesson on Saturday !! It’s 30 minutes £17 which I thought was good !

I’m really excited for this 30 mins ! It’s with a guy and the website says their teachers are experienced musicians who provide the highest quality of instruction !! Well I will find out but it’s worth a go !!
