@Katie L,

So thrilled to hear that you have a lesson scheduled!  I really hope this works out for you.  A good teacher can make all the difference in reaching your goals.

Should have said this a while ago:  your vibrato looks like it’s progressing well.  Just keep at it and don’t get impatient or discouraged.  I was thinking that it might help to set a long-range target like playing In the Bleak Midwinter with gentle vibrato by Christmas and work toward that every day rather than questioning how much the vibrato has developed over a few weeks or so.

Enjoy your lesson and keep up the great work.

Aww thank you Unfretted ! And good idea on the vibrato. I think that’s the way to go.

I just had my lesson and it went well !! Much better than when I had those lessons a couple of years ago ! My guy actually looked at what I was doing and I didn’t even get round to playing a tune until the end ! He gave me to things to practice and some advice and we talked about vibrato finger pressure etc ! The thing I liked was that he was really good himself !! I think he got that I was doing my own thing and learning what I wanted at my own pace ! Also he didn’t say you shouldn’t be doing vibrato yet and was keen to help with it !

@Katie L, that’s wonderful that your lesson went so well!

I hope your teacher will find a way to put you on his regular schedule.  I’m sure he’ll try because music teachers love dedicated students who actually practice seriously and want to progress.  Sounds like the two of you had a positive connection and that’s the secret ingredient to make this work. 😊🎶🎶🎶

Thanks Unfretted . I think my teacher did give me a lot to think about in just half an hour but it would be nice to see him again soon ! Also I noticed he had some cork between his violin and chin rest ! I bought some cork once to give me a tiny bit more height and I never tried it so when I got home I did the same. It’s not a huge wow that’s an amazing difference but it is a bit better

So today I’ve been practicing saving the bow which is what my teacher mentioned after I played Vincent ! Also I think he could tell my counting was non existent ! So been working on that .. and I took a vid 😁

Hi Katie,

When I saw this quick little one minute video last week, I thought of you. It's a great explanation of vibrato and better than how I tried to explain it to you in the past. Hope it helps you.

Thanks Grandpafiddle 😁👍I saw it too but I’d forgotten about it. I think I need to concentrate on that action . My teacher said it’s coming when I showed him my vibrato , which was goood 😁

@Katie L -

Sounds good!

When's your next lesson?

If you get a chance, take a minute to listen to this video.

It's going to be different than your arrangement, but it can give you ideas on how to try different expression within phrases - how it can sound.

I'm sure there's others, too.

@Grandpafiddle -

I like that video you shared on vibrato!

I ended up having to think of vibrato like that last year, just to get myself going better & dealing with different speeds - it helped a lot to get me out of that 'one, two/back & forth' mindset!  ...not that I'm always perfectly smooth yet. (lol)

Btw, definitely can see where you are doing better with bow distribution!

Reminds me, I have ONE trouble spot in a tune I've been playing on & off.  If I don't make a mental note to myself to pay special attention AND prepare the couple notes ahead of it - I end up with awkward bowing.  ...there's no suggested bowings when learning by ear & I haven't 'seen' anyone play it, so I've tried different approaches.

I was watching Fiddlerman Vibrato tutorials... again.  I'm haunted by this one & still trying to go for it.

🤣 I feel like all I can get is a 'wiggle' for vibrato on short/fast notes.  I also run into issues because I have to change my hand shape to allow some curve in my fingers when playing on lower strings - so my fingers can end up more 'across' the fingerboard.

I actually think there maybe a chance I have made a tiny bit of progress with my vibrato !!! So one of my problems is pressing way too hard and then tensing up. But this eve I’ve forced myself to stay light on the string. Also mixing vibrato in with a scale is helping me because I switch fingers. So I’ll do d major but only do vibrato on my first finger ! So now I’ve been practicing Vincent with a bit of vibrato ( everything else intonation saving the bow has gone out the window) which is a bit of a breakthrough just getting it into a piece. Also seem to be a bit more relaxed ! Maybe this is a mini breakthrough that is actually a mini breakthrough !!
