For a discussion on this comparison, please go to the Recording the Violin forum room for the Comparison Shure SM57 vs Moto G7 Phone Mic topic

And now, something even more different. Spent about half an hour today playing Wayfaring Stranger, but more importantly figuring out how to use the new Shure SM57 microphone I got today with my Motorola Moto G7 phone. And of course, I had to make a video to compare the two.

To keep the comparison information about JohnG's new recording system in once thread, the comments made here were moved to the Recording Violin thread that was also started by JohnG. He has provided a link in his post about this recording system above. Nice job with that video, JohnG.

Unfortunately, it's all a lie!!!!! My Motorola G7 Power does not easily support external mic's. That recording I did is always using the internal mic. Difference in sound is either wishful thinking or I played it differently enough to sound that way. I spent 2 hours today trying to get it to work, even using a different camera app. Still more testing to do!

As a result of all the fooling around, I only got about 20 minutes of playing in and played The Ash Grove, Wayfaring Stranger, and some improv.

Last night I got in about 30 minutes playing Ash Grove, Breton Gavotte, Spring, Down by the Sally Garden, Ashokan Farewell, Wayfaring Stranger, and Simple Gifts.

I am sorry to hear this this, JohnG. I am thunking the second time you played it you were more confident with your bowing and the sound came through enough for some of us to notice.

I am still pleased you shared this with all of us.

@Mouse - Thanks, I'm waiting on a different adapter for my phone to see if will give me what I need. The one I tried fit in the headphone jack, this new one will fit in the USB-C charging port.

Tonight was a full 40 minute practice playing The Ash Grove, Breton Gavotte, Spring, Down by the Sally Garden, Ashokan Farewell, and Wayfaring Stranger. Most of that (30 minutes) was on The Ash Grove.

Only 30 minutes tonight after attempting to get the external mic to work on my phone for over 90 minutes. So frustrating. Did verify mic itself is working properly, but neither hookups worked with the phone for either calls or video recording.

Practiced The Ash Grove, Amazing Grace, Simple Gifts, and some improv.

@JohnG curious how you verified mic was working.

The most likely issue is some kind of security setting for microphone access in android in my mind.

Another possibility is no way to turn up the gain enough so mic signal is picked up in app.  If youre using some kind of usb adapter.. does the maker of the adapter have some kind of app on google play?

Have you checked on motorolas support website for the g7 searching for "external mic"?

i know these are kinda like the first thing a cable company ask you to do..."please power off unit and wait 10 minutes....blah blah."

hate your having such issues.  wish i had a fix i could tell you.

@ABitRusty - Hooked the mic into an old cassette recorder and was able to record with no problem. I've downloaded the Moto G7 reference manual with no positive results, I've gone on the Lenovo (Motorola) forum and found that this phone does not play well with external mics and work-around sometimes work, but not always. I've used two separate adapters, one to plug into headphone port and the other into the USB-C charging port, which is what I got today. Neither combo works.

Next step will be to seek help from Verizon (where I purchased phone) and/or Best Buy's Geek Squad.

Fifty minutes tonight playing The Ash Grove (40 minutes on this with tick track), Breton Gavotte, Spring, Down by the Sally Garden, Ashokan Farewell, Wayfaring Stranger, and Simple Gifts.

Even though it was late, it felt good to practice that long. Good times!

I was feeling a bit tired and down, and decided to skip practice today. But around 10:00pm, I suddenly felt like I NEEDED to playl So for the 146th straight day, I played for half an hour; The Ash Grove and some old favorites, Green Green Grass of Home, Oh Shenandoah, Bridge Over Troubled Waters, Man of Constant Sorrow, House of the Rising Sun, Dark Island, and Wayfaring Stranger.

Even when I sat down, I figured about 20 minutes, but had to keep playing for an additional 10 minutes.

It felt GOOD!

@JohnG -

That's great news - nice you've stuck with it!

It makes me feel better, too - but I've recently been trying to practice at other times, instead of right before I should be going to sleep.

Think it's been causing, or at least adding to, the problem I've been having with sleep this past year.

Makes me feel good, but also engages my mind (too much) - the music will keep running through my head, still thinking about how I'm playing, what I want to work on, etc... after practice is finished.  So, I end up too wide awake to sleep.

I've also been noticing I can't just listen to music before going to sleep, anymore - without thinking about 'why I like it', 'what makes it so interesting' (or not) - guess I've finally gotten what I wished for.  ...whether a old Chinese proverb, or Aesop's fable - still a cautionary tale.

BUT, I wish I were a Frog.

Dont know about that mic, but I used to  use a Shure unidyne 3 mic for singing, it was an excellent mic, dont about recording though, and dont know if you can even get them anymore. I used an Alligator 30 watt session amp, a vox ac 30 and a roland cube, which all went through a mixing desk, didnt use them all at once obviously though lol, cant beat a vox for blues, and the Alligator was a great all rounder, cube is probably the best amp I hav ever had. In fact aome of the equipment I used to have would probably be worth quite a bit now., wem copy cat tape echo, jet phaser, and loads of other bits and pieces. my leccy guitar is quite rare now, an Ibanez les paul lawsuit, ont know what thats worth but the sound is incredible, well it would be when i get round to taking off the rusty strings, and getmy extension built so I can start playing again.

@ELCBK - Late for me (10:00pm-ish) is still two hours before bed-time! lol In my case, difficulty going to sleep is mind racing, but usually about politics and the direction our country is going. (Even if I were a frog, I'd still pass on the eating bugs, would prefer to have a beautiful princess feed me from her lunch after she kissed me! lol)

A good afternoon practice session today! A full hour with 20 minutes each on The Ash Grove and a new one, Blowin' in the Wind. Rest of the time spent on fun stuff, Green Green Grass of Home, Oh Shenandoah, Bridge Over Troubled Waters, Man of Constant Sorrow, House of the Rising Sun, Dark Island, and Wayfaring Stranger.

I've got Sandburg's American Songbag, but half these songs aren't even in it. What's the point of that? I feel like ditching it to free up some bookshelf space. All these songs should be online somewhere. Anyone got a URL? (we've had all the sites for every Scottish reel and jig and strathspey ever written, albeit lost in the bowels of the forum, so where are the folksong sites?)

There's some links scattered throughout this list.

Here's another one to add to it - there are some tangos there, too.

http://www.janwolters.nl/jwfree4-uk.html

And one of imslp's many categories is Spirituals - there are a couple of versions of Wayfaring Stranger, although I haven't looked at them yet.

Forgive me for temporarily highjacking your thread, John, but at least the thread-drift isn't too bad!
