I just realized I have stockpiled info/videos on Armenian music - and music is a VERY IMPORTANT part of Armenian Culture. ...don't think I could decide where to present any of it.
Anyway... Armenia borders Turkey, but from what I can tell it's music has more in common with the rest of the Caucasus region, from Eastern Europe to Western Asia (between the Black & Caspian Seas). Besides Armenia, this includes a little of Turkey & Iran, but all of Azerbaijan & Georgia, and part of Russia.
We have Armenian communities in Michigan (among many other ethnicities) - thought it would be cool to start with something local (for me).
Guardians of Music: Armenian Music in Detroit - Ara Topouzian (TEDx).
I do want to share more than early traditional folk music, here. This is a 19th Century composer I LOVE... George Ivanovich Gurdjieff - born in Armenia, grew up in different parts of the Caucasus (well traveled & educated). More info at Wikipedia & in the video description, also time-stamped titles. These 14 pieces were arranged & performed by Anna Konoplyova (violin & strings, but a couple tracks have piano).
...I could listen all night long.
Hopefully I'll pick up the fiddle & play along, later - first, I need to marinate in this music's 'secret sauce' a little longer.
