Hello Everyone!

My name is Moris, I live in Springfield, MO, and work at Missouri State University. First of all, let me say that music is a big part of my life, I listen to music everyday. I have been around music since I was a little kid, I am now 23 years old, and through out the years I have played the drums (which I still play at church), the guitar (mainly chords), the base guitar, and took piano lessons as a little kid (I have forgotten most of what I learned). In other words I grew up around music; with my dad being a Pastor, and going to church often, I have always been surrounded by shiny instruments. At the same time that this could be seen as an advantage, it has been sort of a disadvantage, because at some point or another, I was sort of forced to quickly learn some of these instruments to help at church, and never really focused on fully learning one specifically, other than the drums. But with the drums, I really can't make music, well not as pretty as Violin music :-P

So that is what brings me to the Fiddlerman.com website. I have chosen, or in better words, the Violin chose me :-) I had never touched a violin, until about a week ago, when I ran to a local music store to get me a rental one. Honestly, the deciding factor and what really got me Violin crazy was watching the, "Red Violin," movie. Right at the end of the flick, I told my wife the violin was it! I wanted to learn to how to play it.

So, after doing some research and watching plenty of Youtube videos, I arrived at this site, for which I am very thankful, as in less than two weeks, I am already playing Twinkle Little Star :-) And honestly, when I play that simple song, the sound that emerges from this amazing instrument just makes me want to learn even more, it's really hard to put into words.

Anyhow, I will be on this website pretty much everyday; I am trying to practice as much as I can!

Best,

Moris

Welcome, Morris.  You've come to the right place.  I hope you'll post videos of yourself playing.  It's just a fun thing to do, and you get very helpful feedback.

I've learned so much from my mistakes that I've decided to make some more.

Hi there, Moris,

Thanks for sharing your story. It's interesting to learn how violinists came to choose their instrument. You can be assured of good experiences on this site.  Happy learning!

Thanks for the warming welcome smile

I may indeed post videos of me practicing. I am trying to practice at least twice a day, for at least 30 minutes or so. In the weekends, I will try to get more hours in.

As I mentioned on my first post, I can sort of play Twinkle now, but am still focusing on learning the Etudes Fiddlerman has for learning all the strings. I am still on the G string, but I switch to Twinkle here and there, as I just love hearing the tune and it motivates me to know am making progress.

Plus my seventh month old baby girl loves to hear me play (or at least I think, I haven't made her cry yet, lol).

I got it for a Christmas present.  Told my wife I'll put her blood in the varnish of my last violin.  She asked if it can wait until she dies.

Yes, I highly recommend the Red Violin, I actually watched it again the day after I had seen it thumbs-up

I just got done practicing, and it was a rough session, I think I applied a little too much rosin on my bow, because I felt it sticking to the G-string, which made things a little interesting.
