Hi, I just acquired a student fiddle set about 3 weeks ago. I know very little. I've sort of learned to scratch our Frere Jaques and Twinkle Twinkle. Now I'm trying to learn Old Joe Clark. I really would like to be a decent fiddler. I've played ukulele for about 15 years.

Welcome to the forum, @ukulelegeek I am positive you will get a lot of help and encouragement here. We are all about helping each other.

I just sent you a Welcome Email with important information about this wonderful forum.

I, too have a ukulele. I purchased it a little under a year ago. My intention was to learn it and be able to make myself a little background music for my cello. Still learning, 😂.

Again, welcome to the forum and thank you so much for introducing yourself!

Welcome to the forum!

Fiddlerman provides GREAT learning tools & tutorials that can help you - links located at the top of the page!

I wish the very first thing someone told me, about learning to play the violin, was just how important the bow grip/hold is & how important the use of the bowing fingers, hand & arm is.

If you've been learning by ear, you may find going from fretted to fretless not too bad.

Have you ever tuned your ukulele to GDAE?  ...might also help make learning the violin easier.

Welcome to the forum,

I'll echo ELCBK, technique is very important so you don't hurt yourself in the long run, and it will make playing more enjoyable.

Don't forget Boil them cabbage down, great tune to work on.

I think one of the best parts here is that no thread is every truly dead enough to not revive!  welcome to the club @ukulelegeek !

Welcome (back)!

The important thing is that you kept practicing and you still like your violin. Don't hesitate to post though :--)

Thanks all! I do love this violin. I've been slowly but surely progressing through the lessons in the Essential Elements book 1.

I'm doing PT, and working out in a gym, trying to strengthen the weak muscles in my upper back and neck. It helps a lot. At least my posture is better!

My violin instructor thinks I should seek a practice buddy. I live in the Tampa Bay FL area. Is there anyone who wants a newbie practice buddy in this area?

@ukulelegeek I notice you are requesting a violin practice buddy. I have a suggestion for more views.

You might want to post the request here, in the learning to play section.

https://fiddlerman.com/forum/l.....g-to-play/

Start a new topic. Topic Title: Looking For A Violin Practice Buddy

Then in the text box, describe what you are looking for and the are you are in, Tampa Bay, FL.

Maybe, just copy what you posted above.

So, you post would be in the Learning to Play

I hope this helps. This tip is offered by Mouse as a member, not Mouse as administrator, 😁.

@ukulelegeek -

Look up Bay Area Fiddlers Association - Tampa, on Facebook and inquire.

These Tampa Bay Area Sessions are listed on 'The Session' - where fiddlers gather to jam, you're bound to find someone who 'knows someone'!

Otherwise, I would consider your local Music shops & Community Boards where folks can list stuff.

Best of luck!

Welcome back @ukulelegeek

How is the practicing going for you? Are you playing Old Joe Clark?
Feel free to share your progress with us. We'd love to hear about it.
