Allo everyone, absolute new fiddler from Quebec here! No teacher so I have to learn by myself even though everyone is telling me that it's the devil's instrument and I can't learn because I didn't start as a kid!
I would love to be able to fiddle like my uncles did (french canadian style) and I'm sad I did not find the courage to learn while they were still alive.

@Ryan
Brand new, someone let me play with her electric fiddle for some days but that was it. I hated being *plugged* and new straight away I wanted an acoustic instrument. I can somewhat read music, but it was years ago in college with piano and I forgot a lot!

Welcome, NoirVelours.
Are you too old to start to learn to play violin? I doubt that, you didn't give an age but that doesn't really matter, just as Fiddle4Fun said, it's motovation, not age that matters. I will be 69 in September and really just a beginner myself, even though I started at the age of 4 and played until I was 10. That's when my mother couldn't afford the lesson's any longer or the rental of the violin.
I'm a retired Carpenter, so I have plenty of time to practice the instrument, on average about 3 hours a day. I can read music but prefer to play it by ear. I'm not sure if that is a good or bad thing. Reading music is very important when learning any instrument, if you can read music and read it well, you can sit down and play about any piece in front of you and learn to play that song quickly.
But anyway's , welcome to Fiddlerman's website, you'll enjoy it. The people here are great. And I don't think there is another place on the Web that you can have direct contact with the head man himself.

Thanks all for the welcome, I guess I'm not really old, still in my 30's lol but my family is looking at me as if I was insane.
Kevin M, I sure can do that. My uncles used to tap the beat with their feet, we call it a gigue. I'll link my favorite reel: le reel du pendu, it's a traditional here we even have a legend that goes with it. Other songs would be le reel de Sainte-Anne, le reel des Éboulements, la ronfleuse Gobeil, le reel des sucres and so on

Hi, NoirVelours =).
Same story here .. I started to play at 28 and already learn to play for a year. I'm asked now by everybody, why do i waste my time to learn it, if i know that i'll never have a chance to be a great violinist or make money by my playing. They don't understand why i do this. But all of those who is HERE know _WHY_ =) We all here in the same boat i guess
