Hello, I have loved the sound of a violin for a long time, and I got inspired by my daughter's desire to play an instrument in middle school next year.
We went over a few different types of instruments, and we decided on the violin.
I figured it would be a great time to learn it as well, and we will both be taking lessons starting next week.
I found some amazing violin videos on youtube, and I'm just looking forward to being able to play some stuff without too many squeaks.
We are currently in Austin, TX (for 2 years), but mostly from upstate NY, with a lot of moving around while in, and even after getting out of the Navy. We are all hoping we found the place where we would like to settle down.
I hear this city is the music capital of the world, so I'm eager to get some quality training, and maybe even find some people who would be willing to listen to us play some time in the future, once we become proficient, even if it's just outside of a shopping area.

Welcome the the forums BaldBeardedViolinist!Hope both you and your daughter enjoy your time learning. Looking forward to hearing more in the future
Thanks.
Our (my daughter's and my) violin is on its way here, scheduled to arrive Tuesday. I am setting up our first lesson the following Sunday with a local instructor who happens to live within walking distance.
I guess I figured I should get some professional lessons in before I create any bad habits that become difficult to break.

@BaldBeardedViolinist That is why and what I did. The Suzuki teacher I knew allowed me to take a lesson every couple of months for 5-6 lessons. I learned the bow hold and how and where to bow, how to hold the violin along with all her suggestion so I was comfortable - old tired, stiff muscles here.
While so awkward at first the position of everything is important for quality of sound and comfort after 3 hours of jamming!!
Violinist start date - May 2013
Fiddler start date - May 2014
FIDDLE- Gift from a dear friend. A 1930-40 german copy, of a french copy of a Stradivarius. BOW - $50 carbon fiber. Strings - Dominants with E Pirastro Gold string.

Thanks all!
One thing I thought seemed weird to me was that the lessons were only 30-45 minutes, once per week. I know, obviously I will be practicing each day, much more than that, but it seemed like lessons should be more frequent.
