Hi All,
I am so happy to have found Fiddlerman and this Forum. I am a brand new, adult learne who has had one lesson so far. The violin is an instrument I wanted to play as a child (12/13) but my teacher strongly discouraged me and steered me towards the clarinet. I played the clarinet for approx two months before quitting and enjoying my early teenage years. The experience with that teacher traumatized me a bit and I never went back to playing an instrument. I had forgotten about my wish to play for many years, marriage and motherhood kept me busy otherwise.
Then, around New Year’s this year (23/24) it came back to me, that memory of always loving the violin and wanting to play as a child. Strange how memory works. I decided then and there I would learn the violin. I spent a good two weeks researching everything, different violins, bows, etc. I visited a local luthier to learn more and hold a violin since it had been more than 35 years since my awful experience with that teacher. I was sooo careful handling the instrument, like a new parent, barely touching it, and definitely not trying to make a sound - lol. I had the luthier play a bit for me. Oh, how I loved the sound! I also got to listen to a young girl playing her Viola - almost made me want to play that instead.
It was such a great experience! It made me do more research and I found my perfect violin.
Got new strings, a bow, rosin, and a fine tuner from Fiddlerman, and reached out to four different teachers. I picked one and my journey began. Less than a week into learning and I feel every small improvement is worth a celebration.

Welcome to the forum and good luck with your journey.
If you want a bit of instant advice, I would get a fine tuner for your E string, they only take about two minutes to fit and is extremely easy to do, and they only cost maybe a dollar in your money, and will make life a lot easier for you/
Cant beat a sunny day

Hi @berlinroots, and welcome! You have a good looking fiddle and I’m sure you’ll make some fine music with it.
This is a great place, with interesting and fun people and plenty of support for any challenges that you may encounter. You’ll undoubtedly bump into some issues, but with patience and persistence you’ll get through them.
This forum has a wealth of information, and time looking through the various threads will be time well spent. Often the members bring a variety of perspectives, and that is always enlightening.
I’m almost three years into fiddle (background in other instruments) and I have made great progress. Once I learned to not push too hard and to take it one step at a time the violin became a great source of joy for me.
The fiddle is an amazingly versatile instrument, with capabilities that are almost endless. It also seems to have a mind of its own (at least mine does) and sometimes it resists my best efforts. But when everything comes together it’s magical.
Enjoy the journey!
Strabo

Thank you @Strabo There truly is a lot of information in this Forum, almost overwhelmingly so. I am taking my time reading through some of the posts. I’m almost a week into practicing and every little improvement I make is worth a small celebration in my mind. During my first practice playing the open E was a complete nightmare for me. I squeaked and scratched, took me forever to determine the correct pressure (I call it a butterfly kiss). Now, that I am starting to use my left hand (practicing A-major scale and E and F# on the D string, at a snail’s pace) I don’t find the open E as difficult, especially when practicing the A-major scale. This is a big step for me 😊
I have a long, long way to go, but, as you pointed out in your post, I will get there one step at a time. My focus is on mechanics (posture, bow hold, proper bowing, relaxed shoulders, relaxed fingers, etc.) and intonation right now, everything else will come in time.

@berlinroots Welcome to the Forum! Nice looking violin you've got.
When I was young, I wanted to play violin, too, but no string programs where I lived. Took up drums instead I think string playing is becoming a later-in-life endeavor for many. Congrats on finding a teacher & starting lessons
