I have been thinking of taking lessons but it is pretty expensive here and only one teacher in the area.
What's the going rate. It's about £25($40) per hour around here and lots of choice with the Birmingham conservatoire and others being close (10-20 mile radius) coz the foreign students like to supplement their income etc
I am amazed at how old people of my age are.....

i would love to have the time to take lessons. i can barely find the time to do some practice and play. i really love playing with other instruments (banjo/guitar) that is a big lesson in itself.
well actually its not as hard as playing with a piano. different keys are easier to change on a piano.

Welcome Mimi...
And for me, I've studied violin for really long time, had lesson with so many teachers and professors ..... So I understand what you feel
We have a joke about string instrument like this:
- Double bass is too big... if you want to be a big guy with big instrument, choose it, and become a BOSS!!
- Cello is sexy... so sexy... it have a good shape so all the girls want to play it... they think it sexy, and they have some romantic time playing it
- Viola is what we call "half-way".... You propably found so many joke about viola players... negative joke ... it's not too big, not too small... it's in the middle size with middle tone .... no fun playing it.... but we must appreciate them, withough them, string section will never be string section again
- And finally Violin - Queen of string instruments - King of Orchestra..... and it's never easy to handle a King or a Queen right? So understand when we choose violin, we just choose a hardest way to go... really painful way
I think everybody here have been through your time when we must play every note... slowly... with sticker so we can press a right note.... So many people leave because they can't take it... too tired and boring.... but if we love it.. we do it
Just take it cool and do it slowly :).... slow start always help for a fast long road to reach the end
Hope that you'll never give up...
So nice you just found a right place to share experience
Welcome to Fiddleman's Violin Family :))

This guy wants $50 per hour wether you make it there or not. You have to pay for for weeks up front and with the farm it's tough sometimes to make it there so I am trying to find a student around here that I can get lessons from, from time to time. I'm not complaining about the farm work because you get to do things like this.

Yep. When I was in school I took private lessons from college students. It's a much more economical way to go. It's a good fit for summer lessons too.
