Hi there, folks.

I've played guitar for years and have convinced myself that learning violin would be my next challenge. I purchased an inexpensive fiddle (Silver Creek 5) online from a guitar warehouse (first mistake). I should have peeked in here first...

I'm now searching locally for a teacher to show me the basics: Posture, bow grip, bow pressure (if any), applying enough rosin, etc. I tried by just watching the plethora of videos online but have yet to play a coherent note, plus tuning is a struggle.

I'll get there eventually!

Welcome to the forum, you will find lots of other guitarists as well as banjo players and the like on here. I myself only took up fiddle as a challenge, which it is, but a very, very rewarding one if you persevere, ask any questions and someone will give you an answer, no matter how stupid you think the question is👍

By the way tuning a violin is difficult at first, till your ears start to develope, best bet is use an app or an inexpensive electronic tuner.

Welcome to the forum, @BlackTrain. We are pleased to have you join us.

I think you will enjoy learning your new instrument.

Above the main forum, there is a menu bar. Fiddlerman has provided a lot of tutorials for all to use, which you can access from there, you also can ask here on the forum. Different takes on the same issue can be helpful. Also, as Stringy mention above, here on this forum, there is no such thing as a stupid question. We are of all levels, and abilities here. Ask away. Don't be afraid to share something that you learn that you think might be helpful to others. Even newbies learn things more experienced players were not privy to, or may have forgotten. We all have value here.

I will be sending you a welcome email, a little later, with a little more information about our lovely forum.

Tip, Don't remove all the strings at the same time, if changing strings. The bridge is not attached. Change one string at a time. So if you need to change your strings before you find an instructor to show you how, and you need help, ask away here first and it will be explained.

Again, welcome to the forum.
