It's all about the combination of shoulder- and chinrest. Finding the best one for you will take you 10 or 20 years and lots of money.

I'll have you know that I do not, cannot, and will not use the device you call a shoulder rest. It would interrupt the communion between the fiddle and my body, which is simply unacceptable.
I don't judge those of you who do use shoulder rests, though.
I hope that someday resters and non-resters will be able to live in peace and harmony.

Welcome! While I use one of those shoulder rest things, I don’t like chin rests for the most part. I have tiny vintage ones on my antique fiddles, but my main modern fiddle goes without, I like the connection and freedom to ring it gives the fiddle

I've only been playing 3 years and started playing 5-string Viola last February.
Took my shoulder rest off about a month ago - so I'm free, too! 😊

My relationship with my violin has been of the on-again, off-again variety. I think the FIRST time we got together might have been 5-6 years ago.
