Hello everyone! I'm currently learning through self instruction which has brought me here. I've watched tons of YouTube videos on fiddle/violin exercises and instructionals, that's where I first found out about this site. I'm hoping to continue my progress and I need somewhere to ask questions! I know that I'm at a disadvantage doing this without a personal teacher and as an adult but I'm not new to music.... I used to play flute and saxophone while in school, I always want to play a fiddle but it's not exactly the type of instrument you find in a school band! I purchased a cheap violin when I was in my late teens but never learned anything more than how to torture our dogs! I gave that violin away and gave up, after about 6 years I bought a cheap Bestler from ebay, which I still have, I started to learn fingering and bowing but lost interest until this past spring when my youngest son (7 years old) wanted to hear me play... I played about three very bad notes and he loved it! He asked if he could learn to play so my wife and I bought him a used 3/4 and have him scheduled to take lessons from a local instructor. We let him listen to some classic violin music and he has no interest at all in it, however he loves the swing of fiddle music specifically jigs and reels!

Hi Jasonh and welcome :-)

Great idea to pick up your violin again with your son starting. There are a few others on the forum who did that and really enjoy it. I missed that boat 24 years ago, ho hum.

By the way, is your son really, really tall for his age?... just thinking that 3/4 sounds BIG for a 7 year old. I guess the new teacher will weigh in on that one when he starts.

Hi JasonH and welcome.  I just purchased two volumes of “The Portland Collection” by Susan Songer from a fellow forum member and found them to be a bargain (particularly when purchased second hand).  Your son may well find them of interest as well.

You are correct! That's my mistake, we bought a 1/2, we looked at a 3/4 and he could hold it but not comfortably.

Welcome to the forum Jason. Glad that you found our videos. Lot's of members learn to play the violin/fiddle without instructors and it works fine. It all depends on how you are at doing your own research and at being your own teacher. Experiment and determine which changes work for you and which do not.

Really cool that your son wanted to play after hearing you even though you didn't shine. He may end up teaching you some stuff soon. :)

Welcome to the forum! I got back into the violin because my son started playing. Some of the best times I have had with my son has been playing a duet with him. Love it!
