Hey Matt, I swear I'm not trying to be solicitous, but for the issues you said you have, you should keep your chin rest and try The Slipper on FiddlerShop.com; it specifically addresses your two biggest issues... your violin is raised a bit higher and it stays in place.  Check it out; if you buy it and it's not the right solution, FM will refund your money.

FM- Thank you for the warm welcome. I'm glad to be here. As someone pointed out in another thread, the positive attitudes around here are definitely wonderful. I am finding that my neck injury is what keeps me from practicing for more than 30 minutes. At the end of 30 minutes my neck is in so much pain. I truly do not want this to be an issue and so I will be taking your advice.

I live in Satellite Beach, FL. It is on the east coast on a barrier island. I love it here. Unfortunately, my injuries keep me from doing a lot of things I love to do for very long so I figured I pick up my long lost dream of the violin only to realize my injury is once again fighting me. I think I may have to pick up The Slipper that ftufc suggested. It's pricey but it might be worth it.

gkeese- Isn't it funny how we did or didn't do things based upon what we thought others would think of us? Only to find out later in life that it would have been the best thing for us. I have a close friend who says that I'm such an artist inside but I refuse to let anyone see it. Unfortunately at this point I have no skills to express myself and it sucks. As a graduate student I NEED to be able to express myself artistically. All I do is research and write papers 24/7. I want the violin to become my outlet for my life sooo badly.

Mad Wed- It's good to know I'm not the only one who is "old" and trying to learn this darn fiddle. I'm gonna be good if it kills me lol.

ftufc- I will be seriously considering The Slipper. Also, I don't know if I mis-spoke up above (and I'm to lazy to scroll up) but I have a normal chin rest and the tallest shoulder rest I could find. I will look into a taller chin rest as well.

What would you guys think if I got The Slipper AND maybe a center mounted chin rest? Or is the chin rest a bad idea. The reason I ask is that I think I am pushing down onto the fiddle with my entire head using my jaw and obviously I'm going down and to the left. I think this is straining me very badly. BUT, I will be taking FM's advice and try to use my jaw, not my head. So many things to learn.

And Hman is pronounced exactly how it is spelled, "H" man. My last name is German and is long and people always misspell and say it. In the military people just started calling me Hman for short and it stuck. It is the perfect nickname for me as my last name is H******man.

Matt, I quickly converted to a center chin rest too, for the exact same reasons, the side-mounted chin rest just put too much pressure on my neck and cranked it.  I think there are several advantages to a center-mounted chin rest.  It's all about personal fit.

Hman

This is a fantastic over the tailpiece chinrest:

The Impressionist would give you more height.

Having the chinrest over the tailpiece gives a sense of balance on the instrument. I haven't made the switch but I definitely play with my jaw over the tailpiece. smile

Ok FM, please do not hate me. I just got back from my local violin shop and I just now finished installing both of the products you suggested above. I am in love with the violin now. I can actually hold it WAY more comfortably and I am not straining my neck at all. The second I held it with the center chinrest I was loving it. But once I put the Impressionist on their I was in heaven. I honestly don't want you to be mad b/c you recommended them and I got them locally. But I could not wait. Had they not had them I would have ordered them from you in a heart beat. That being said, I am probably going to order The Slipper from you any day now. I just have to get over the fact that I'm paying $100 for a shoulder rest. Again, thank you soooo much and I do feel badly. But I was just way to anxious to get my violin feeling comfortable.

thumbs-up

Hahaha,

Hman, please don't feel that way. The local shops need all the help they can get. They have super expenses that we online shops don't have. I'm happy that you support them. If you didn't they may disappear and I wouldn't be happy about that. The best way to buy things is to be able to test it and make sure you are comfortable with it.
I believe that all the news that you gave me is great news. Congratulations.
Actually since you found the Slipper here on the forum go ahead and order it directly from Fred on his shop:
http://www.theslipperrest.com/
I really want to help him out with his new business and there will be less money going to merchant services or paypal fees twice. smile

Thanks FM. I truly did feel badly and I used to work at a local board shop. And around here loyalty means something even when buying a board, for better or worse. I shall order the slipper probably next week sometime. I still don't wanna spend the money lol.
