Hello everyone! I've been having a look around the site for a few days & thought it was time to do an introduction. I'm from Louisiana...anyone else??

I'm fairly new at violin playing, started a few years ago on a cheap chinese model that I had to pretty much put together not knowing what I was doing. I stood the sound post up, carved a bridge, added grooves for the strings at the top of the neck, & re-strung. Still don't know if I did it right!! It sounded like I was killing cats for a long time, got discouraged & put it aside for awhile. It's been calling to me again, so I'm back!! LOL!

I'm an older adult & have some arthritis issues, but I'm determined to conquer this thing!  The chinese model has a high clear sound...not bad really. I just got an old german strat copy a few days ago that is low & mellow. It's a joy to play!! My next will be FM's Concert Master...I love the sound of that one! I've been playing a mix of all kinds of  music, but love the blues & classic rock.

I don't know how much I can offer as I'm still a newbie, but I am here to learn! violin_girl

Pull up your bow, drop all your concerns and join right in. We are mostly in the phases in between "somewhat comfortable playing" and "figuring out the that strings go up" when you play. If you've been lurking and reading, you know some people *cough* picklefish *cough* are a bit crazy. Then there's the rest of us perfectly normal individuals who are ... ok, we're not exactly normal. But we do try.

Join in and be welcome to this synergetic group of violin/viola beginners and oficionados. Your arthritis may hinder your play, but it wont hinder the welcome you will get here at any ability level of play.

Welcome to the site dogandponyshow!  Great to have another mentor here to help us newborns with our journey :) .  Lookin forward to hearing some great Cajun style if ya play it!  I can relate with the arthritis, got it in my left hand a bit but an Advil usually does the trick for practicing.  Ah the dying cats again, lol...  So many poor felines running for their lives when we first start out, or at least mine does till he takes out his frustration on my bow adding a rehair to the to do list haha.  I guess they don't like a louder version of themselves screaming at them :) .

Who said we all have to be normal haha ;) , guess it depends on the definition lol.

Welcome, Dogandponyshow....I love the name!  You will love this site and spend lots of time on it most likely!  I am also an older adult & also have some trouble with arthritis or what I think is more like tendonitis in my right bowing hand and wrist which comes on with lots of practicing. Shoveling snow brings it on too. But I guess you won't have to worry about that!!! I use a comfrey ointment on my hand which does help a lot.  (You can't buy it, I made it from my plant in my garden).

Ya! Cajun music!

Welcome Patricia,

It sounds as though you fit in here like a hand in a glove. thumbs-up

All that luthier work you did so early in the game and mixing all the styles of music as well. Sorry to hear about the arthritis, my wife just started with Turmeric and Ginger for similar problems.

Look forward to your future posts and getting to know you better here.

You should have ran when you had the chance. Once you drink the Fiddle cool-aid, its hopeless to try and turn it away. It calls out in the back recess of your mind until you finally cave. First, you just pull our the bow. Then, a little rosin, and try and justify, "its just a few bow strokes. What can that possibly hurt". The before you know it, you need a 12 step program to help break the fiddl-a-diction.  ;)
