Hi there, my name is Elena and I'm writing you from Padua, Italy (:

I'm Chinese but I was born in Italy, so I can speak very well Italian (and sufficiently Chinese and just a little bit English )

Why am I in a English forum though I can't speak very well English ?

'Cause I really want to learn English well, and moreover English forums are better than Italian one.

(I hope you'll understand what I mean anyway >_<" )

I've loved violin since  I was a little girl, but my parents never allowed me to study it (they say it's useless), so now I'm 15 but I have never picked up a violin (I think it says so, in Italian is "prendere in mano un violino" >_<" )

However in all these years I've saved enough money to buy a violin by myself :)

I thought about a Stentor Conservatoire to start, but I'm not sure...

What do you say?

And above alI, is it too late to start??

Help me please, everybody says it's too late or it's too difficult, no one encourages me, I'm alone :(

Thanks for all and sorry for my bad English ^^"

I hope we'll become friends anyway :3

Welcome Elena,

I new here also and I apologize for my bad English, too. I've been speaking it 56 years and I'm still not very good.

I just played my first violin this past weekend. I promise you are not too old and don't let people scare you into thinking it's too hard.

I'm completely new here but I know there are plenty of people on this forum that are willing to help beginners like us.

I can only imagine how good you will be by the time you get to be my age.

Hello! Nice to meet you, Elena!

Firstly, your english is ok. I just see no reasons to disturb about it. So, don`t worry.

Secondly, I strongly believe that people should try to produce a purpose from their dreams. Don`t worry about what people think. These people will after a short period of time look at you with an admiration! Make you dream real!

I`ve just started to play violin 2 weeks ago. Believe me, there is nothing scary! Learning is a difficult process and it takes a huge amount of time. But you will be fascinated by violin since you start to play! I wish you success! ;)

Hi Elena,

Your English is perfectly fine. Your not too old to start. Anybody that tells you that doesn't know what they are talking about. > If you want to learn, you will learn. It takes a while to play well but if you want it you can have it. It just takes patience and desire. Welcome to the forum.

Hi Elena I just started playing the violin this last May - I am 58.  Have you ever heard the idiom - "You can't teach an old dog new tricks."

It's not true!!

You CAN teach an old dog new tricks.

Violinist start date -  May 2013

Fiddler start date - May 2014

First at all, thanks to everyone! Now I'm more confident, and I believe that if I can dream it, I can do it too! I absolutely tired of people who pretend to tell me what I should do or what I shouldn't do, I just go and I'll try to realize my dream.

Maybe I won't be the best violinist of this world, but at least I tried. I won't give up, I'll knuckle down more and more.

Good luck for your dreams, I hope everything will be okay :)

Bye bye, see you soon   :)

Don't listen to all that cr*p! You are the one who decides "To do, or not to do" =)

Welcome to the forum Elena,
We're happy to have you here and as everyone said above, you are not even close to being too old. I was 12 but I'm sure I could have waited way more than 3 years and still been able to play. :-)
I know people who have begun learning in their 70's. It may not go as quickly at that age but the older generation learns too. It all depends on your ambitions, goals, discipline, methods and time available for your journey.
Also, your English is fine. We hope we can help improve it.

Welcome!

Congrats on following a dream even though everyone says its a bad idea. i'm 23 and i just started learning. It is such a fun journey. i wish i'd have started at 15. We will do all we can to help you in your journey :) and everyone is right those who put you down don't deserve to be listened to. Why not support anyone in a dream they have? if nothing else it becomes a great hobby! I play just for myself not anyone else and i don't care what others think. Good luck and hope to see more from you soon!

Ohh, I'm happy to listen your experience, they're interesting :D

Out of curiosity, you're self-taught or you've taken some courses with professional instructors ?

Is it possible to learn to play the violin without a teacher who follows you?

Honestly, I really don't know how to start :/

@Helene - I am half and half taking a lesson every 2 months- saves on costs but is keeping me from developing bad habits and helping me perfect my technique.

I have known how to read music - played flute in JR high school.  I have discovered some interesting differences between reading flute music versus violin music - phrasing breathes VS bowing slurs and stacattos.

  Welcome Welcome.

I encountered the looks and the criticism for starting at 46... I was turned down... yadda yadda... but I am here .. two years later ..Having the time of my life and connecting to music  like I never have before in my  life.  I mean I have always been a music lover...but this whole new level is like  cosmic music goodness... like from the universe or something.

Keep it up..follow you dreams.  I applaud you for saving up and getting a violin... I know what the feels like to want and save.

Good luck.. Happy Violining.
