Hi everyone. My name is Scott. I am 25 and I live in California. I am currently attending college for technical support. Technology and music are my two passions.
I have been "playing" the viola for a couple years now. I use the word play loosely because I haven't taken any lessons. I taught myself what I know (which isn't much) by reading and watching YouTube videos. To be honest, this probably has lead to some bad habits that I will need to correct but I tried my best to get the basics down. I also don't know how to read music so I play completely by ear. I have an electric viola but it still makes A LOT of acoustic sound. So much so that I had to buy a mute for it. It's nothing special and it doesn't sound the greatest but I got it for around $150 bucks off of eBay, haha. It's a starting instrument and I will definitely invest in something better in the future.
I've had a passion for music for quite some time. I played the piano when I was younger but I gave it up because I didn't like it at all. It was after high-school that I discovered the beauty that is string instruments. I purchased a violin and started playing but I quickly realized that violins are too small for me. I have fairly large hands and my knuckles were hitting the pegs. I switched to a 16" viola which is the viola I mentioned previously.
I am constantly inspired to become a better violist and now I am really looking to take lessons. I'm the kind of person who solely listens to classical music. (Andre Rieu, Bond, Johann Strauss, John Williams, etc.) That's much I love it, lol.
Thanks.

Thanks! I will cross-post this over on violaman.com. I can't seem to access it at the moment though.

Welcome, John! We have people of both the violin and viola persuasions here. There are even some closet cellists.

Let me add my welcome also. I am learning to play viola also and I have a violin as well. Sometimes I learn the rudiments of a tune on the violin in treble clef then transfer the fingerings to the viola. Since my violin and viola are both 14" instruments I dont sacrifice fingering skills by switching between them.
BTW the closet cellists are in the big closet.

Hi Ray. Thanks for the reply.
You have it made! Violins are truly too small for my big hands.
